So lately the Bishop has said Mass at the Cathedral. At the dismissal/concluding rite the Bishop has a dialogue with the congregation that I do not know the responses for. (He does the dismissal because the deacon recently got moved to another parish for a semi retirement). I have been looking but can’t immediately find in on a google search (my search terms must be wrong). Anyway I know one part that the Bishop says is “Our hope is in the name of the Lord” But it is a two part dismissal and I forget the other part and don’t know the responses at all. Does anyone know the dialogue?

(Arch)Bishop: Blessed be the name of the Lord.
ALL: Now and forever.

(Arch)Bishop: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
ALL: Who made heaven and earth.

The first is Psalm 113:2
The second is Psalm 124:8.

How cool is that?

Thank you so much. Yes it is awesome. Our bishop is a blessing for this diocese. It was the centennial of the consecration of the Cathedral today, and there was good music, incense (which we never have), alter servers who knew what they were doing and a Mass done to the rubrics . Prayers for this holy man.

I’ll be praying for your bishop! Can you pray for mine? He is so wonderful and orthodox, but he gets attacked by the media and the liberals all the time. It’s frustrating seeing how much he goes through on a daily basis.

Just a curiosity, under the updated translation of the Mass we are now using, are these concluding rites still the same? Can’t seem to find any info on the web.

Yes. That is, the dialog with the bishop is the same.

Of course, even when the celebrant is a bishop, the new final words of dismissal done by the deacon are also available.

But the dismissal is still done even when a bishop is celebrant, right? It follows his pontifical blessing, correct?

This rite is used at a pontifical Mass (basically one where the Bishop has mitre and crozier). The versicles and responses are standard and occur at other times, so it’s worth learning them. In my diocese, they are rarely used and I first came across them at a Mass with 5 bishops at Milan Cathedral (mind you, it was Ambrosian Rite so I went prepared for anything).

I have drafted an Order of Service for Confirmation during the vigil Mass of St Peter & Paul. I don’t know whether we’ll get the pontifical blessing (unlikely), the blessing from the Confirmation Mass (I would have thought more fitting) or the special blessing for the feast. I’ve prepared one of each and the bishop can take his pick on the day.

Yes.

When I said “available” I didn’t mean “optional” what I meant was that since this thread was discussing the old ICEL adaptation, the new words of dismissal may be used, so in that sense, the words have actually changed–just not those specific ones the OP asked about.

Many thanks, much appreciated 🙂

Another place for special episcopal verbiage is at the beginning of Mass after the Sign of the Cross, where a bishop (and only a bishop) may say “Peace be with you.” Also, during the Eucharistic Prayer, where a priest would pray “For X, our bishop,” a bishop would say “For me, your unworthy servant.”
