I’m not sure if this is the right sub-forum for this topic but it didn’t seem right to put it in the Ask an Apologist section.

I’ve been listening to some sermons from audiosancto.org. This website has eight years worth of sermons on it from a specific Catholic church. One of these sermons, entitled “Review of Sins Against the 6th and 9th Commandments” contains a condemnation of kissing by unmarried couples from Pope Alexander VII and further clarification from Saint Alphonsus. (This specific section starts around 7:45)

I think he is quoting a specific document of Pope Alexander VII

Pope Alexander VII condemned the idea that it is only a venial sin for the unmarried to kiss for the sensual pleasure arriving from the kiss even if there is no danger of further consent of going even farther.

“…condemned. What does that mean? Saint Alphonsus explains. ‘Quote this means that every time someone with sufficient reflection and full consent of the will delights in carnal or sensual pleasure associated with to whom he is not married he commits a mortal sin. This is not only true with kisses but also with respect to other touches performed for carnal pleasure. The reason is that any delight taken in carnal pleasure, that is to say any delight taken in stirring up the appetites which surround the creative power, is a movement towards the martial act.’ Close Quote. The Doctor of Moral Theology of the Universal Church.”

The following is a quote from document I pulled from a very poorly made webpage promoting a Rev. T.G. Morrow so I’m not sure how correct it is.

Achieving Chastity in A Pornographic World

“Some have suggested that kissing should be postponed to marriage to avoid sexual sins. Perhaps most of the kissing being done nowadays should, but there is a presumption here that people are not capable of sharing tender, affectionate kisses. Affection is an excellent language of love and should be shared chastely in courtship. In fact, sharing chaste affection is an important element in preparing for a healthy marriage. When affection is seen as simply an introduction to sexual activity, there will be problems in marriage, because while a woman often needs affection, she does not always need or want sex.”

The priest in the sermon does have a response to whether kissing should be completely prohibited (around 14:10).

“Father are you saying we can’t kiss at all? No, of course not. Unmarried people can kiss. Not necessarily a good idea but they can. They can? Yes. The kisses allowed to unmarried people are just like those kisses you might give to great grandpa or great grandma. A little peck on the cheek kind of thing. That’s it. No passion allowed. Father no one can live like this! Well naturely speaking there may be some truth to that but God never commands the impossible. That’s why he gives us supernatural powers, sanctifying and actual graces. What do we have to do? We have to avoid the near occasions of sin. Say the three Hail Marys every morning and night for Holiness and Purity according to our state in life. Say the Rosary every day. Go to Confession every week or so and make fervent Communion and you can live like this. That’s just what St. Paul is telling us in todays Epistle…”

Two Questions:

Does anyone know what documents this priest is quoting? I, understandable, can’t find anything through Google.

What do you think of this condemnation of kissing? Can it be really be done by a man looking for a wife today? I really don’t want to move to the most conservative Latin Mass community I can find (that isn’t heretical) to find a woman who might want to marry me.

my son will not sleep…so i am up to comment…

Yes…kissing can be sinful. Yes even mortally sinful (when it is grave matter with full knowledge and complete consent…)

No… the kiss does not have to be like that given to ones grandparents!

But yes it needs to be chaste.

One should not kiss for the sake of sexual pleasure…such pleasure is reserved for marriage…

One should not consent to any sexual pleasure that should happen…and should yes avoid the near occasions of sin (mortal sin in particular…for the sexual realm is very important so it is in the realm of grave matter)

Passionate kissing is reserved for marriage…

But remember kissing can be pleasing without sinning…(but know yourself…and use prudence and good judgment…and of course the virtues of temperance in general and chastity in particular)

Fr. Morrow from what I know of him and his work is a good source and comes with good credentials (also I met him once and had a conversation with him)

I have heard the sermon you are referring to. I agree with the priest. As a single man, that is saying quite a bit.

What’s wrong with Traditional Latin Mass girls?! Try it, you might like what you find 🙂

On the subject of lust, see this post:
forums.catholic-questions.org/showpost.php?p=6543916&postcount=3

Lust is an interior sin, which might be committed at any time, in any circumstance, even within marriage. Even a married couple might commit the sin of lust. However, exterior acts are not necessarily accompanied by lust. And passion is not lust. A married couple who are passionate are not necessarily committing the sin of lust. So passion is not lust.

A couple are dating, but are unmarried. They have a grave obligation to be chaste in their acts prior to marriage. If they fail in that grave obligation to a grave extent, such as by having premarital sexual relations, it is a mortal sin. But if they fail in their grave obligation to chastity to a substantially-limited extent, such as by being overly passionate in kissing and hugging (but without lust), it is only a venial sin.

(I can not recommend the last post or the links provided for somethings there are incorrect)

From the Catechism:

2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.

A person can lust even in his own thoughts…even without intending to do any exterior act.…even if he is unwilling to commit an actual exterior act.

and of course a person can lust while doing exterior acts …

Kissing can be good…and chaste…and affectionate…

…or it can be sinful.

(as can other things involved in dating…)

of course remember …often times it can happen that some thought or sexual pleasure comes…and is not consented to…

for example a couple may chastely kiss…and some sexual thought or pleasure comes…but they do not consent…and the person knowing himself or herself…then moves away from the kiss at the right time…depending on knowing oneself etc…and does not consent to any sin but actually preforming an act of the virtue of chastity…and growing perhaps in this virtue…

it is one thing for an unintended and not consented to sexual feeling to happen to one…outside of marriage…

it is another to seek or consent to such (thus being lust).

of course too…it can happen that even in grave matters…where sexual pleasure involved…but which do not have full knowledge at the time…or where there is only partial consent…such would by definition be a venial sin.

Compendium of the Catechism:
  1. When does one commit a mortal sin?
1855-1861
1874

One commits a mortal sin when there are simultaneously present: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. This sin destroys charity in us, deprives us of sanctifying grace, and, if unrepented, leads us to the eternal death of hell. It can be forgiven in the ordinary way by means of the sacraments of Baptism and of Penance or Reconciliation.
  1. When does one commit a venial sin?
1862-1864
1875

One commits a venial sin, which is essentially different from a mortal sin, when the matter involved is less serious or, even if it is grave, when full knowledge or complete consent are absent. Venial sin does not break the covenant with God but it weakens charity and manifests a disordered affection for created goods. It impedes the progress of a soul in the exercise of the virtues and in the practice of moral good. It merits temporal punishment which purifies.

How can married couples sin by lust? Is it bad if they have impure thoughts of one another?

Lust is not merely sexual desire. A husband and wife can have sexual desire for one another without lust.

A husband commits the sin of lust toward his wife (or she toward him), if he uses her as a sexual object, merely for his own pleasure, so that in principle he is not having sexual relations with his wife, but with whatever source of sexual pleasure is available, or if he is willing to obtain pleasure in an illicit sexual act with his wife (even if the illicit act never occurs).

Thank you for the responses. If I am ever in the position where kissing is an option I will abstain. This teaching makes a lot of sense to me and I would rather take the narrower path which doesn’t involve a near occasion of sin. I am not exactly of wellspring of fortitude considering the problems I’ve had with pornography so avoiding as much temptation as possible is a excellent idea.

Now back to my first question…

Does anyone know what documents this priest is quoting? I, understandable, can’t find anything through Google. I would really like to read more on this topic from either of the two sources he quoted.

Fr. Morrow is a good source…

Though not kissing is an option…it is not the only one…

Reason…temperance…etc

Oh, now this is getting to be a little bit of overkill. This is my opinion on the whole matter:

No, kissing is not a mortal sin in most circumstances. Heck, it’s not even a sin half the time.

Here’s how I see it:

Friendly kiss (i.e.) kiss on the cheek: Not sinful at all
Single kiss on the lips: Not sinful
Prolonged kissing without intent to have sex (premarital) (i.e. “making-out”, no tongue): not sinful to venial, it depends.
Prolonged kissing with intent to have sex (premarital): mortal
French kissing (premarital): venial to mortal, depends on full knowledge and consent issues.

We have many patristic sources condemning adultery, fornication, sodomy, and onanism.

Are there any that assert that premarital kissing is a grave matter?

I highly doubt it.

When it comes to sins of impurity, many people think, “If it’s a mortal sin, then I don’t want to do it. But if it’s a venial sin, then I don’t want to miss it!” We need to drop this minimalist idea that focuses on how much we can get away with before we offend God. Even the smallest sin divides, while purity ignites true love. Elisabeth Elliot wrote in her book Passion and Purity, “How shall I speak of a few careless kisses to a generation nurtured on the assumption that nearly everybody goes to bed with everybody? Of those who flounder in the sea of permissiveness and self-indulgence, are there any who still search the sky for the beacon of purity? If I did not believe there were, I would not bother to write

I realize not all kissing between a couple romantically involved will be mortally sinful. Assuming as much would be a grave error and smack of scrupulosity. However, we have a very serious obligation to avoid all those acts which are sinful, even if just in a venial manner.

I realize the condemnation of a particular action or set of actions from a Pope is not a infallible statement of Dogma but shouldn’t it still be taken seriously be us even though it was made so very long ago?

Once again, does anyone know what documents this priest is quoting? I, understandable, can’t find anything through Google. I would really like to read more on this topic from either of the two sources he quoted. I don’t live near a Catholic university which might have the resources to find such documents so I was hoping someone on this forum would know where the quotes were from or at least be able to direct me to a good place to ask. I think having the sources Fr. Wolfe quoted would be helpful to myself and this thread.

EDIT: Well at least I have corroborating evidence that the source of the quote from Pope Alexander VII exists thanks to Time from 1956.

  1. Yes kissing in an chaste way can be a good.
  2. We do not have a very serious obligation to avoid all those acts which are sinful, even if just in a venial manner. For that would lead to scruples…
We should yes avoid venial sins…amen! But one should not say we have a very serious obligation…for that would make them into moral matters…we have to have the humility to know that as the Church teaches…outside a special grace from God we will not be able to avoid all venial sins…though we can of course avoid each one …so it is not a excuse to commit them. But we need to understand that they will happen…also we are not obliged to avoid every occasion of venial sin…otherwise we would have to leave this life…

So yes let us live our baptism! Lets turn away from sin and towards Christ! But let us know that we will still sin in venial ways…and will need to ask forgiveness…and with humility work to avoid each one in a reasonable way…without scruple etc.

You really do not need to find it…for such has been too the understanding in moral theology…for one cannot seek or consent to sexual pleasure outside of marriage…

I used to think like this until I listened to Fr. Morrow’s logic. I would suggest you listen to it as it is the basis for this thread.

I was lurking on this thread, but I’m confused. Is Father Morrow the priest who is giving the homily? If so, then he seems to be contradicting himself in his homily and in his writing. 🤷

Ok, I checked out the link. In all likelihood, the priest giving the homily is not Father Morrow. That explains a lot.
