It’s not that weird–a number of cultures have taboos involving menstruation.

It’s almost more the rule than the exception for a culture to have menstruation taboos.

One certainly does see posters who complain about how few available infertile days they have, while skipping menstruation entirely. (I realize that that might be called for by an NFP method, but not by all.)

No worries! I just tend to mention the point that it is permissible BECAUSE of my early confusion as a convert, and my exposure to certain groups within Christianity who believe we must still follow the laws of the Old Covenant. I grew up reading the Bible daily, but had no formal catechesis until RCIA, so some things were very confusing.🙂

As the wiki site attributes to Christianity…“There has never been any official teaching that menstruation makes women unclean in any major Christian denomination.”

My confusion was that someone growing up Catholic could think this. However, I do know that many of the Protestant denominations knowingly or unknowingly, pass on misinformation about Catholicism to their children as a matter of tradition. (Not everyone of course)

I have to confess that on the night before my wedding, I had the uncomfortable talk with my mother about womens business where she told me to always urinate after intercourse to prevent urinary tract infection and that intercourse is a great way to relieve severe menstral cramping. Back then there were certain things that were only spoken about among married ladies!
 
to the OP: Google Petra Frank-Herman for, AFAIK, reliable, secular studies about the effectiveness of sympto-thermal NFP for postponing pregnancy. It may reassure your hubby.

@thewanderer: OK, good. I think it is a pretty persuasive study. I have never been able to find out much about Dr. Frank-Herman, but I think she is a secular researcher.
