I attend Yale University, outside my door they hang a bag of condoms for students to freely take. There is no cost, and no limit to the number you can take. I have sometimes taken the whole bag and thrown them into the garbage. Is this theft or morally permissible?

You are doing a good deed. You are throwing garbage where it belongs, in the garbage.

They’re there for you to use…you’ve “used” them in a morally good way!!! If they did that at my university I’d find an inventive use for the condoms like you have…like lining my trash bags.

Idk… you can never do an evil act to reach a good end. The school is providing them for a particular purpose. You are doing something else with them. Is it ok? I think it depends on if the people paying for them would consider what you are doing theft. If they would, I don’t think it’s permissable.

What happened to the days when shame was a deterrent?

Good grief. I’d have a public burning if possible.

How about a sexual harrassment lawsuit? That is very permissable.

I would think that is morally permissable. Wow… at Yale? I guess I cannot be too surprised. It is a public rather than religious institution. I would think that they would be spending time better studying rather than… oh well… I guess that we could do our part and take away some of that temptation

Does the school explicitley say what they are to be used for? If not, I say use them however you like- ensure those garbage bags can handle them and whatnot. Or waterballoons. Those are always fun 👍 👍

IMHO I don’t think it’s theft for it’s there for the taking.

I have this habit of tearing out Abortion pages from hotel directories.

Have you listened to Christopher West’s Naked Without Shame on cd? If you haven’t please do. You will not regret it. IF you have, then right by the condoms, you can invite people to study the theology of the body with you…if you get one person to study with you then its one less person pulling condoms out of that bag. Use it to your advantage to promote the Culture of Life.

May God grant you the courage and vision to use this circumstance and turn it to the good, noble and true.

in XT.

This is serious stuff here. If we are going to be Catholic and follow the Church’s teachings, and follow God, we have to be serious about it. We can’t go making excuses for things. If you want to make excuses and try to find “loopholes” for why it’s ok to throw the condoms away, you may as well try to make excuses for why it’s ok to use them in intercourse. There’s no difference. We have to uphold morality not only when it benefits us, but regardless of how it affects us, and regardless of how it affects Christ. He was telling the truth, so He could have used that as an excuse to get Himself off of the cross, but He didn’t. He held to the Truth even when it led Him to death. Sure, I would love to throw them away. I am in that type of situation many times during my day. However, I can’t do these things, even for Christ. If I do, I’m sinning against Him. I can’t do that. We can’t make exceptions just because it favors us or it favors God. Sin is sin, no matter who it benefits. If we start doing that, we’re hypocrites. Hypocrites aren’t gonna make it to the Kingdom of God.

In its latest communication Yale informed me that it has broken its affiliation with the United Church of Christ so as to be freer in its theological outlook.

For a little background. Yale was founded by the Congregational Church. In the 1950’s the graduation procession went by way of the Congregational Church on the New Haven Green each year. I think the United Church of Christ is the current form of the Congregational Church after some mergers. It is not known for a Conservative stance.

I dunno. Don’t you feel pretty sneaky about it? Like you wouldn’t want anyone to see you doing it? It is a pretty fine line. Hmmm… have you prayed about this and asked for guidance?

yes but it is his door, if he leaves them there tacit consent is assued and scandal might ensue. easy way is t remove them, harder way would be to find the … people who put them there and make it perfectly clear that he doesnt want to see another object that even looks like it could possibly be used as a contraceptive anywhere near his door.

I guess your reasoning is because it is immoral in your opinion, then it is not sinful to steal them. What if an Evangelical, who thought statues of Mary were sinful started smashing all of the Mary statues that people have and that Catholic churches have? In his opinion he is doing God’s labor, but is it OK to destroy somebody else’s property?

He didn’t say it was ON his door. He said it was OUTSIDE his door. If it’s actually on his door, I think he can remove them or at a minimum demand them to not put them there. BUt if it just so happens they have a condom station that they stick near his door, that’s another story.

Could you approach whoever is in authority at your school, inform them that you find the comdoms to be offensive and to your personal religious views and ask them to be removed. Then, if they are not removed you can sue or file a complaint (hey it works for the other side). Just a thought. Try this and let us know how it goes.
