I’m planning to go to confession today, and I’m not sure if there is a specific way I should confess mortal sins or not? I mean, there’s a lot of things I want to confess (heh, I’ve even got them on cue cards so i don’t miss anything), but I can’t really be sure whether certain sins I have committed were mortal or not (some of which occured a long time ago).

If I confess to a priest, should I indicate that this was a mortal sin, or does he assume that all grave sins are mortal? I’m just worried that if I miss something or forget something I don’t want to have to go re-confess again. I’d just as well let the priest assume everything was a mortal sin, just in case I miss anything. Is it also necessary to list how many times you committed a sin, or is that irrelevant?

Thanks.

start at the beginning, go until you reach the end, then stop speaking. Just a simple statement. I did this 5 times (or several times, or once, or it has become a habit) just indicate how much of a problem this is. He does not want to hear your life story (either do we). Be contrite, be truthful, be concise, be gone. that is the advice they used to give us. don’t give explanations, justifications, circumstances, monologues. If the priest needs any info he will ask. He know very well what a mortal sin is.

Puzzleannie explains it very well. Later after your Confession if you wish to discover what constitutes a mortal sin you will find that info in your Catechism of the Catholic Church. It also explains the difference between mortal and venial sins. I’m sure this info is online, too, but I just don’t know where. It might even be on this website! God bless, and have a wonderful Confession! 🙂
