How do confess pride? As in pride where you don’t really brag or show off out loud. Would you just say, “I was proud” or what?

And what about lying? Would you just say, “I lied”. Or do you have to be specific.

Thanks:thumbsup:

Pride: It depends what you mean by “pride.” It’s not always a sin. A fleeting thought that you don’t consent to is usually not a sin at all. Feeling satisfied that you have done a good job is probably not a sin, as long as you don’t get carried away with it or think yourself superior to others, etc. If you do cross over into “confessable” area, simply describe what you did in a few words.

Lying: For small lies (if you are sure they are venial sins), just saying “I lied” is probably sufficient. In serious matters, you should tell enough to let the priest know the gravity of the situation (for example, “I lied on my tax return to the tune of $1,500,” or “I lied under oath in a court hearing”).

This is interesting…do you think the priest wants to know the details? We were taught by the good sisters that most of our venial sins are attached to the 7 capital sins. For instance, maybe you lied because you were full of envy because of what someone else had or because of greed. I don’t even know if they teach about the 7 capital sins anymore. But I do know that when I examine my conscience I always bring the 7 capital sins into my thinking so I can examine why I may have committed a sin. If I see a connection I confess the sin with the reason I may have committed the sin. I don’t know if this is the correct thing to do or not.
