Confession 2x in one day....?

Curious to hear your thoughts on this.

Most of us would agree that frequent confession is a good thing, but is there a line that can be crossed?

For example,…

If someone goes to confession in the morning and then falls into mortal sin later that afternoon and then in an effort to get back on track (absolved/forgiven) goes back to confession that same evening, then would this be inappropriate or even considered sacramental abuse?

I actually did this once. I think that anytime one realizes that their soul is in the state of mortal sin they should seek confession. This is to be discerned to make sure that one is just not being scrupulous. But if you truly fell into mortal sin then by all means go to confession.

If such should happen…yes one can repent and go to confession…

(If such should occur the person can discuss his difficulty at more length with the Priest and get further direction…)

It would certainly be appropriate. Mortal sins should be confessed as soon as possible or we risk our immortal souls. If that means going twice in one day, go twice in one day. Also, seek spiritual direction to get the sin under control.

If you’re not scrupulous and did in fact commit a mortal sin in the same day after going to confession, then yes you should go to Confession again, as you don’t know you’ll wake up the next morning. That being said, if the confessor is a good confessor and takes his duties seriously, he will likely question whether or not you indeed had a firm amendment not to sin again, as well as to avoid the near occasion of sin the first time you went to confession, and whether or not you have the firm amendment required to absolve the second time.

I once went to confession twice in one day and the priest, as soon as he heard that my last confession was that morning, immediately refused to hear my confession and told me that he had a “policy” of not absolving someone twice in one day and to “pray about it and come back tomorrow”.

I would have responded, “How do you know I’ll wake up tomorrow?” Really, we know not the day nor the hour. When I was a kid we used to pray “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”

I can see where he might be coming from, but I think some more questioning and inquiring is required before deciding not to hear a penitent’s confession.

Any time you fall into mortal sin get to Confession at the earliest moment, even if you have to go to confession twice or more times in one day.

OP, did this priest know you or know that you are scrupulous if you are? The only way I could see that being acceptable is if the priest knows you are scrupulous. Even then, I still don’t really think it’s appropriate. He should have heard you out first.

I’m certainly NOT scrupulous, and this priest does NOT know me.

I went to a different priest in the morning, then later that afternoon to this priest who refused to hear my confession as soon as he heard that I’d been to confession that morning.

Then I would definitely say the priest was in the wrong. I’m sorry for your experience.
