I currently live in a foreign country where most people do not speak English but their native language. The priests in the church near my home do not speak English but informed me I could write a letter and bring it with me when I go to confession. I went to confession and the priest could not understand all of what I said but he said I was forgiven and I gave him the letter I wrote. I then attended mass and ate the Eucharist.

Am I forgiven my sins even though the priest may not have understood me?

Also is it okay I ate the Eucharist?

Gut instinct, yes.

If in doubt, visit with an English speaking priest at your next stop (or now, if your home.)

I love my trips and visits to Mass where English is not their first language. It helps me realize that our faith really is everywhere. Sometimes in rural KS it is easy to forget that.

God Bless,

Yes and yes. Language is never a barrier to God’s grace and when you receive the Lord without mortal sin you receive Him worthily 😉

I would visit an English speaking priest if I could. I am sure there are some around, I just don’t know where to find them. I wont be home for a long time.

Yes, you are forgiven.
