Does confession abslove all sins even venial sins you did not confess? Also does absoultion happen after or before you do peance?

Provided you have at least imperfect contrition and you’re not knowingly and willingly withholding a mortal sin (both of which would make the Sacrament invalid), then yes.

If you fail to do penance is that one new sin or does that retroactively invalidate the absolution? I’m guessing one new sin, but since it’s only a guess…

My understanding is penance has nothing to do with the forgiveness of sins. After absolution, all your sins are forgiven. As a token of thanks and to satisfy for the temporal punishment of your sins, you are asked to do a penance. It has nothing to do with forgiveness.

In earlier times, you could even gain indulgences and reduce your penance.

My latest penance requires 3 days of physical exercise for 30 minutes. 🤣

It’ll get done. I just wondered about the absolution issue. Thanks. 😊

I also heard somewhere that the priest does penance for you, so you can be rest assured if you have accidentally forgotten to do your penance.

But if you purposefully refused to do it, then you might want to do it, even if it isn’t technically speaking a sin.

But this is a great question. Because I usually receive communion right after mass and so don’t usually have the time to do penance. I receive communion because I believe my sins are forgiven. I still remember to do the penance right afterwards. But if you totally forgot, for not fault of yours, I can’t see how that would be a sin. Next time, write it down somewhere so that you don’t forget.

You’re absolved when the priest does the “I absolve you” prayer.

Penance today is to help you grow in holiness and show gratitude to God. It has nothing to do with absolution. I think in the early Church and in medieval times, people did penance BEFORE they confessed and were absolved, to show they were truly sorry.

😆

My son was well pleased to hear it. He was grinning from ear to ear. I may just get swol at that.

He has been trying to get me to work out with him for a year. Not sure why as I wasn’t out of shape till I took time off work later in the year. Now my problem is same calorie in as when I was working so I’ve grown a little.

Thank you. I’d be good with the old way too but it’s always nice to know I’m forgiven if God punches my ticket before I’m done… or if my penance gives me a heart attack. 😂

Does the peance apply just to the mortal sin or the unspoken venial sins too?

Penance is for all your sins, but once again, penance has nothing to do with being absolved.

If you didn’t bother to do your penance, that might be a separate sin of its own going forward, the same type of sin as promising God you’d do something like pray, and then not bothering. You would want to perhaps confess a sin like that at your next confession.
But it has zero effect on sins that your priest already absolved you of in the confession you just left.

So hypotheticaly if you die right after a good confession you would go straight to heaven?

Yup. That’s why people often want to make a confession if they are in danger of death.

Of course, as Cajun said, you might have some temporal punishment to work off by going to Purgatory for a while, but you’re still “saved” if you go to Purgatory as it’s guaranteed you will eventually go to Heaven from there.

If you die in a state of grace and with no attachment to sin, you might also qualify for the deathbed plenary indulgence that the Church gives to everybody who has been in the habit of saying some prayers throughout their life.

That’s why you should do your penance and also ask the priest to grant your plenary indulgence. He’s supposed to know this.

You might still have to go through purgatory but the Church has done all in its power to make your journey to eternal dwellings as smooth as possible.

Only God knows your heart at death. If you’re genuinely contrite after your confession, have no attachment to sin and desire to go to heaven, you will go there. But such genuine contrition takes ages, so start practicing now.

Yes, sorry, apostolic pardon. I got topics confused in my head, was replying to an indulgence topic elsewhere haha 😉

So does the peance you get in confession not count for the unspoken venial sins?

If the person has habitually prayed during their life, and the priest isn’t available or doesn’t make it in time with the Apostolic Pardon, then they get the plenary indulgence instead, although I’m presuming they have to be in a state of grace. They don’t have to fulfill the other conditions for confession, communion and praying for the Holy Father though.

It’s all in that article I posted. It’s kind of a “fine print” indulgence. I was unaware of it till I read the Manual of Indulgences and then I was all like, well there’s no point in me even bothering to stack up plenaries during my life then, all I need to do is pray consistently and I get one when it counts the most anyway!
