Confession after a long absence

I grew up and was baptized Catholic. I left the church several years ago, but now I would like to return to the church. Obviously, I need to go to confession. Should I call the priest first and set up an appointment or should I just go to confession this Saturday?

Depends, confessing is just that in general, there is no need for an entire story unless the priest asks for details. But if its been a while, maybe make an appointment ahead if you feel like you would be rushed in regular confession setting or you would like more time for confessing.
 
I sometimes aim to be there before the start of the session to get in first and not hold the queue up later. Btw, I had a gap of a number of years too and it took less than 10 minutes.

Thanks. Should I go to confession Saturday or wait till I have a meeting set up?
 
Also to add to this, if you @OKComputer write down your sins for reference, make sure to destroy it after. Just thought I add some advice too ;-;
 
Personally I would probably go to the Saturday confession if possible. My reasoning being that the sooner the better.

And also, it’s great that you’re coming back. Blessings on your journey.
 
However you feel comfortable…You are coming back to God and to the church and I am glad for you, Maybe in your case, you should call your priest and if your willing sit down with him and have a face to face confession. Some do not feel comfortable with that… If you don’t , just go into the confessional either way, it’s a way back to receive the Holy Eucharist…My prayers are with you…God bless you.🦋🦋
 
I returned fully after 30 years when I was visiting the Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC as a tourist…I was intending to attend one of the several morning Masses, but arrived in-between. There was a sign “advertising” confessions just outside the Crypt (if you’ve been there, you know what I mean). The priest’s first response when I entered was “Well…welcome back.” I told him my circumstances and confessed what I could blurt out under the circumstances - I know all else was forgiven. Today I work for a Catholic Church in the Midwest. Like the Nike ad, just do it…smartest decision I’ve made in years…
 
it is up to you. Some people like to clear things up with a priest after a long absence from the Church. I would say that is very good.

On the other hand, some people find it is more difficult to do that but nevertheless have the desire to return to the Church.

After being baptized, you are a Catholic already. You only have not been practicing for sometimes.

All of these can be covered during an ordinary Confession time. So basically, it is your choice.

Meeting a priest personally allows you to discuss issues you want to bring up, so there’s an advantage in that.

Confession also allows for those who have lapsed to have a normal Confession. That’s the beauty of the love and forgiveness of God. He is like a loving Father, who is sitting on a verandah watching the road. And when he sees his son coming back, he just get up from his chair and runs towards the son, to welcome him.

Just go. Tell the priest you have had a long time sinning and let him guide you.

I was in confession line today…and the second in took about half an hour. She came out very happy!
