Confession at different parish sin of pride?

Hi allisonmargaret,
I do this myself (go to a different parish / priest for Confession). I had a somewhat negative experience when I went to Confession once with my regular priest, and it kind of haunted me for a while. So I just prefer to go elsewhere, if I have the opportunity. I also prefer to go anonymously, and they have that “reconciliation room” in my parish.

I will begin RCIA in a couple of months. I, too, am looking forward to my first confession and feel it can’t come soon enough. But I plan to go to another church for it.

I kind of compare it to my gynecologist. I’m not ashamed or embarrassed to have an appointment with her, but I also don’t want to socialize with her. I see my priests several times a week for church social functions and volunteer work. In the same way I’d feel too exposed and intimate sitting next to my doctor at a dinner party, I’d feel too exposed and intimate socializing with the priests. Perhaps my view on that will change later as I become more knowledgeable and comfortable with Catholicism. For now, there are three Catholic churches within walking distance of my home. I’ll choose one of the other two.

I took RCIA at a parish where a cousin of my wife is the pastor. When it got around to when people were doing their first confessions I talked to the Deacon in charge of RCIA about it and he talked to the pastor and his thoughts were the same as mine - that it would probably be better to go elsewhere.

I had a friend at work talk to his spiritual director about it and I set up an appointment to go there during the day from work (I had a long commute at the time.)

Honestly, I usually go to other parishes for confession most of the time now anyway because I got in the habit of going to daily Mass at noon and most parishes who do that have confession before it at least one day a week if not more. None of the parishes around here, including mine, have anything but Saturday afternoon Confession and only morning daily Mass.
