Confession before formal reception?

Long story short-as I said in the meet and greet thread, I have just recently begun my journey into the Catholic Church. I have not even begun the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. However, I have a severe problem.
The other day I committed mortal sin. I know enough to know that it was grave matter entered into with full knowledge and consent, and I am now experiencing the fruit of it in the painful sense of isolation from God.
My question is this: is it permissible for me to go to confession even though I am not formally in communion with the Church? And if so, should I go to regular confession or meet with a priest beforehand since this is all very new and a little awkward for me?

Unfortunately the sacraments are available only to Catholics except, perhaps, when someone is in danger of death. Why don’t you make an appointment with a priest for some counseling and to find out about how to get started with RCIA.

Reception of the other Sacraments is only possible after Baptism. If you have been Baptized, your access to celebrating the other Sacraments is in your pastors hands, speak with him.
