Confession before Sunday Mass?

I wish it could be done everywhere. We have confession available before Sunday Mass in two of our parishes, and before Saturday evening Mass in our third parish. And we only have one priest. These are parishes in small towns, so maybe it is easier to offer it in this situation. I’ve heard of some places that have confession once a month, or by appointment.

You have a wide range of people in Mass, it is important for all to be exposed to a confession line. For kids to see their parents go to confession. For older folks to see people going to confession. They need to understand that not all of them murdered someone, dismembered the body and scattered the remains throughout the region.

😆 Well, that is one of the few behaviors no longer socially acceptable in society. Everybody on both side of the political aisle agrees 😆

Confession before Sunday Mass is common in OF parishes in my archdiocese. One parish, operated by the Dominicans, has confession before and after each of the 7 Sunday Masses. Our cathedral doesn’t offer confession on Sundays, but it does Monday to Saturday 3 times a day- often with lines.

This is not an EF vs OF issue.

I had a priest tell me once that if you received in a state of mortal sin but went to confession immediately following mass, this wouldn’t be sacrilege since the period of confession extends until after mass immediately. Not sure if this is true, just what I heard.

But if it is true, if everyone goes to confession after mass since it’s not offered before, if there is a 3 hour wait for confession, how long does “immediately after” encompass? So I’m thinking this is questionable given the logic?

It’s not true, so don’t worry about the logic of it. It’s illogical to begin with.

If you’re in a state of mortal sin, you must go to confession before receiving communion.

We have confession before the first Sunday Mass at my OF parish. Also in Sunday evening and an early morning slot one weekday.

What I wish is when there are multiple parishes in the area, that they could perhaps work with each other to have different confession times? That would ease the load on any individual priest.
