I few days ago, I had some pot with so friends. Bad, I know.

So I went to confession today, and while confessing my other sins, I completely blanked and forgot to confess the marijuana use.

Do I need to go back? Am I forgiven of this sin?

Is it a sin? Mortal or venial?

If you have truly forgotten it then you have been absolved. However, every forgotten mortal sin that has been absolved still must be confessed during the next confession.

It’s my understanding that if you are forgiven…provided…you are TRULY repentant.

Secondly, you would need to bring it up next confession.

Now, you said you were using marijuana with your friends. This reminds me of something St. John Bosco said. He was said to have had a visión of hell, realistic to the point when he touched the outermost wall of it, the skin of his hand peeled off…in real life!

Anyway, his guide told him 3 things that bring people to hell…bad books (now can include magazines, videogames, internet, music, etc.), bad habits, and bad friends.

With this marijuana usage, do you realize you have already, in a few paragraphs admitted to 2 out of these three? You have admitted to the habit of marijuana and that your friends are using with you.

For example, I avoid friends if I find they cause me to sin.

In AA, they tell us when we want to drop the addiction of alcohol that we have to change, people, places, and things. If we keep hanging around with these same people, they will probably tend to influence us to fall rather than us influencing them to be better people.

Reconsider these habits. I think it’s a mortal sin.

Bad habits have 3 levels. The first was…I forget what they called it. Second was…habit. Third was an addiction.

If your friends are helping you to sin, might be time to find some new ones and best to drop this habit before it becomes an addiction.

I would say that you are fine. People consume alcohol with friends all the time and don’t run to confession. While pot is drug so is alcohol and neither should be used to the point where it tampers with our use of reason. You might consider who you hang around with so as to be more productive with your time. I don’t see this as a mortal sin but then you know all of the details and I don’t. Mention it next time you go to confession but most importantly stay away from drugs period. You are forgiven so show God that you truly are sorry. That’s my 2 cents… teachccd 🙂

Marijuana affects the memory… just saying 😛

Seriously though… like others have said, if you forgot by accident to confess using marijuana, you are still forgiven of your other sins, you just must confess it next time. I would also mention to the Priest that you forgot to mention that sin in your last confession. I don’t know if that is required or not though. It is just what I would do.

I have no clue if all marijuana use is a sin or not. And then, venial or mortal. I don’t use weed so I really have not found the need to inquire about it. But I have smoked my fair share in the past. Hope this was something sporadic that you did, and not a habit. God bless.

In confession you are forgiven of ALL your sins. There is no such thing as a partial absolution. You are always completely absolved unless you intentionally withhold a serious sin. In that case NONE of your sins are absolved because your confession is deemed invalid. He should mention this next time to bring it to the Church (Keys of Peter) but if indeed this was a sin at all it was already forgiven. God bless. ><>

Teachccd mentioned that alcohol is a drug too and it is permitted within reasonal amounts.
I would think marijuana would be the same.

So if you didn’t take marijuana to excess, and this probably varies with the person, then it would be ok.

One other factor has been overlooked. It is against the law, so you are violating the civil law. Not only that, but you are also encouraging the supplier to violate the law as well. And the friends you are doing it with have also broken the civil law. And we are bound to obey civil law that is not violating our faith. So the damage in this area needs to be accessed as well.

May God our Father give you grace and peace.

I would question whether moderate use of marijuana is a sin at all. As far as the breaking of civil law goes, small amounts of marijuana in most states are misdemeanors equivalent to a speeding ticket.

You are absolutely right. I meant to say that “you are still forgiven of all sins” Not “All your other sins” That was my mistake OP. See…? I use to smoke weed 😃 But anything you forgot, if it was a Mortal Sin, still needs to be confessed next time.

At your next confession make sure to mention the marijuana usage that you forgot to mention at your most recent confession - to be on the safe side.
