Hi everyone,

I’ll make this quick.

Well I finally got my father and brother to come to Mass just about weekly 😃 however, this means no more Saturday night Masses when Confession is offered beforehand. Now that my brother and father go, I can’t really attend Confession as much as I want. Now I really need to go. I really need to 😦 but I can’t per se. Why? Because I will be alienated from my family. I’ll be looked upon as the ‘religious one’. My mom already saw my Miraculous (sp) Medal and I almost cried because she’s been so cruel about that stuff in the past. 😦 ad my dad has made comments about me being religious. It’s very embaressing for me 😦

So basically my question is this:
What should I do about Confession? Suck it up and go or wait until I can go by myself (or my school offers it)? Advice?

Stay cool;).
Be firm.
Think of some witty yet gentle come backs to their statements. Humour is a wonderful deflective stance and/or just agree with them.
Above all, pray for strenght.
Your in my prayers,
Andrea

PS: Even if you have to do this all in secret, known “but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Mathew 6:8!

You only NEED to confess mortal sins. However years of venial sins tend to clutter up things, so confessing often is a good habit. Now I’m only 22 and am stuck in a similar situation in that I work a job on Saturdays that interferes with the regularly schedule confession. I could take work off, but I don’t want to miss too many days of work.

I had a very powerful confession a few months ago after going through several weeks of anger and bitterness, and its been really sad to watch all the many little sins slowly ink up the wonderful and freeing state of grace I experienced. So I get that you really “need” to go!

One of the reasons my experience was so powerful was that I began preparing for it several hours in advance praying and meditated before and receiving communion afterwards. Assuming you are not in mortal sin, then doing the same before your Sunday mass with you family could have very similar results. The blessing of the holy water entering the church washes your venial sins, the prayer and meditation cleanse your mind, and the Grace of our Lord in the Eucharist is enough to create a saint in just one dose!

So I know I didn’t quite answer your question, but hopefully gave you some ideas at how to turn this closed door into an opportunity. Of course if it is a true mortal sin, confess right away!

Let me know if there anything else 👍

Is it possible for you to take your priest aside a little before Sunday Mass and ask him to hear your confession then? Depends, but some are really nice about it.

Hey there! I think that it is so great that you want to go to Confession. I love it! Why can’t you go to Confession on Saturday and not stay for mass? Also, you could set up an appointment with your priest (weekly/bi-weekly/monthly) for Confession. But which ever way you go, try not to be as self-conscience about being called religious. I wear my ultra-Catholicness as a badge of honor. If you are lovingly worshiping God, then don’t let the man get you down. :😉

Wow, I think it is awesome that you seek confession. So sad that some look upon this sacrament as a ‘have to do my Easter duty’ instead of the life giving gift it is.
Personel experience. Go…to Confession… let the world see it. Never be embarassed of your faith. Jesus said, those who know me will know the Father, those who deny me will be denied by the Father. I looked upon it as “An example” but I did it knowing that my Salvation and forgiveness is my own responsobility.
My family as well gave me the typical, “Well here comes the righteous one” “Good morning Father Jerry” (I am not a Priest but this did not stop them) I took this with great honor. For words are all they gave me, insults. Did not the martyrs go through so much more? I was not stoned. Or run through with the sword. Burned alive or beaten.

SuperCatholic Man… that was my favorite I never did get the cape. But, that was the last insult. I told them I would pray for God to forgive them for mocking his creation. “Make fun of me. I can accept that. But will you accept that I will Pray for you 5 times for each insult?”
They all go to Church with me now.
Unto death, I will praise the Lord.
God bless. Keep the faith.

Hey there!
Hi! 👋
I think that it is so great that you want to go to Confession. I love it!
Thank you!
Why can’t you go to Confession on Saturday and not stay for mass?
Because now that my father and brother go they are trying to do what we used to do when we were all younger- 10:15 or 12:00 Mass. No more solitary Saturday night Masses for me 😦 I shouldn’t complain though. At least they’re coming now! 😃
But which ever way you go, try not to be as self-conscience about being called religious. I wear my ultra-Catholicness as a badge of honor. If you are lovingly worshiping God, then don’t let the man get you down. :😉
Very true. But I’m young (between 15 and 19; I am weary disclosing my real age on the net). My family looks down upon the ultra-conservative, or somewhat conservative Catholics (for example, the Catholics who go to daily Mass, are very involved in their parish, or who are ‘old-school’, pre-VII). 😦 So if I show that I’m interested in that stuff I’m ridiculed or embarrassed. I’ve cried many a time over it (and I’m a guy! Not to say that all guys never cry though ) .
Wow, I think it is awesome that you seek confession.
Thanks!

Wow! Now that is awesome! 👍 You have guts man! That’s great! I must be too sensitive though. I get embarrassed or I cry when my parents make fun of me for being religious. I can’t help it. That’s how I am I guess. My mom must have taken notice because if she sees me doing something religious she’ll ask, but she’ll be like “I won’t make fun of you. What are you doing?” Hearing her say that hurts me. Why? Beats me!

Thanks for the insight though. It encourages me! 👍

If your sins are not mortal, just remember that receiving the Holy Eucharist cleanses you of venial sins as well. Also, doing an act of contrition before Mass helps a great deal.

I just read your post above. The questions your mom asks might be because she wants to learn more about her own faith. Keep doing your “religious things”, they just might be a form of evangelising.

You’re cool because at your young age you already know what’s important, and you’ve already influenced your family.

Regarding confession, you might want to call your priest and ask his advice.

Oh ok thanks for clarifying 🙂 and thanks for the advice too!

Do you drive? Are you allowed to take the car when there is confession ?

First I have to say that I think it is wonderful that you take your faith so seriously at your age. 👍

Now, if I was in your position here’s what I’d do. Pray, make a phone call, pray some more and go to confession.

Pray. Pray for your parents and family to understand who you are. Ask for the Holy Spirit to guide them back (?) to the church and the sacraments.

Call you priest. You said you drive. I’m thinking you are in school. Make an appointment with you priest for 10 minutes after school or some time that you will be out of the house on “regular” business. If you have to leave 15 minutes early for that dentist appointment so you can swing by the rectory for confession on the way, so be it.

Pray some more for yourself and your family. Pray for strength and humility so you are not so embarrassed by your parents’ comments. Continue to be the one to set the example.

And now that you have that appointment for confession, go and keep it.

P.S. If you do go with the giving the priest a call and the secretary answers, you do not have to tell her what it is you want to make an appointment for. You can simply say that you need 15-30 minutes for a pastoral visit.

I’d second the suggestion of finding out if there’s a priest who can hear your confession on Sunday morning before Mass. That’s usually what we do, since my husband is away at school on Saturday and we live in a different town from our parish. Our priest doesn’t mind and so far it’s worked really well. I’d also take advantage of it if you can go to confession at school. That’s what my husband does too and that’s worked out pretty well for him as well.

I’ve noticed that sometimes even when I’m not conscious of any mortal sins I just feel like I need to go to confession… so I go an confess the ones that I think are venial and instantly feel at peace. It’s such an amazing gift!

Yeah my family makes fun of me for going to confession too… they think I’m crazy and religious too. I am 18. And it makes me cry a lot (but I am a girl :P)

So, do you have a car you can use to get to confession? What I usually do is go pick up my friend or my boyfriend and take them to confession too and I just say “I’m hanging out with my boyfriend / friend.” It’s true after all  You could do something like that.

In my opinion you should go. Just think about what the martyrs had to endure for the faith, and we get to experience a small portion of that suffering when our families ridicules us.

But if you really can’t go, then you really can’t go, and God will understand.
