Confession during Holy Week

I’m in RCIA and I’ll be confirmed in a week. Last month I made my first confession, but I really think I ought to go again before confirmation. With this coming week being Holy Week, will it be next to impossible to get in for one? I ask because I know a lot of people flood in before Easter because of the once per year/before Easter requirement. I guess I’m just asking what is the most practical route to take. Wait until next Saturday, assuming the regular Saturday times are available, or go early in the week to someplace else (There is a chapel run by an order that does them daily).

Check to see if anyone is having a Reconciliation Service. That’s a liturgy that includes Scripture, Hymns, an examination of conscience and then individual confession. They usually bring in lots of priest so that everyone has a chance to confess.

Ours is on Wednesday of Holy Week with, perhaps, 2 priests, perhaps only our pastor. It doesn’t really matter, only a handful of people show up anyway since Confession hasn’t been a priority in my parish in 5 years.

You may go to any parish you wish to make a confession. My parish priests are hearing confessions all day this Tuesday, because many people want to go before Easter, as you said (although you’re probably not in London, Ontario ). Check with your parish office to see if your parish is doing the same, then go early! Waiting until Holy Saturday would probably not be a good idea. More crunch.

I went last night following our parish’s Latin Mass and Stations of the Cross. But, had I not made it then, would have attended a communal service (NOT a communal sacrament – everyone confesses individually to a priest and receives their absolution and penance) sometime during the week. Every parish around town seems to be having them Tuesday or Wednesday.

Many, probably most, parishes will not have the regular confession times on Holy Saturday. In the parishes I am familiar with there will be no confessions after Wednesday at the latest; many will not have confessions after today. It’s a busy time for the clergy and they have to observe priorities in what can be done.

If you want to go to confession during Holy Week, ask a priest early in the week. They get busier as the week progresses. Most priests don’t hear confessions during the Triduum (although I am sure they would for someone in danger of death).

I agree - in Oz here it’s Monday of Holy Week already, and the lines for confession are already getting pretty long. Sooner the better!

We’ve got one church here (Sydney) that has such a strong charism of confession that they are offering confession most non-stop every day during Holy Week - including Easter Sunday What a blessing.

there will most likely NOT be confessions on Holy Saturday in most places as the day is spent in prepration and retreat for the catechumens and getting ready for the Vigil. there will also be no evening Mass before the Vigil (starts at 9 pm here).

If you are in RCIA I am surprised a reconciliation service with private confessions has not been arranged for those of you who are aleady baptized and need confession before confirmation and first communion. ask your director what he recommends because he knows the “local” schedule, and even other locations where confessions may heard this week. go earlier rather than later, you will have a hard time finding anywhere for confession on Thursday, Friday or Saturday

You didn’t specify if you were baptized or not. I’m assuming you are, as you said you’ve already celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation (unfortunately I’m all too familiar with uneducated places that celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation prior to Baptism). So, assuming you’re already baptized, it’s really up to you. You’ve already celebrated the Sacrament, that is wonderful and laudable. Imho don’t worry about being over scrupulous. The Eucharist also forgives sins. If you think you need to go to Reconciliation again, by all means do so in whatever means are best available to you. If not, that’s fine too…focus on your Initiation, that’s much more important in the long run.

Call the Church office today, ask to make an appointment for Confession before the Easter Vigil (explain that you are being Confirmed at the Vigil). The Priest will take care of it. Don’t delay, call them today.

You can ask a priest or your RCIA instructor what the Confession schedule is at your parish. Then you probably should just go to the earliest one you can get to. If there aren’t any in the parish you’re going to now, check online for other parishes and by looking online and perhaps making a call or two, you should be able to find out what their schedules are regarding Confession.

I don’t think there will be any on Holy Saturday. I think the parish I attend just had its last offered Confession this morning, but some parishes offer them every day.

i didn’t receive communion last week, because i felt i needed to go to confession. i tried, (was late) but the line was way too long. many people did not get to go. i don’t see any other times being offered this week either.

is there a link that tells you if your sin is mortal or venial? maybe some of us don’t need to go.

Try to call anyway (but do it ASAP) and see if you can make an appointment with the priest. While it’s true that some people will have only committed venial sins, we’re all required to confess once a year, so I wouldn’t grudge them for doing their Easter duty.

When all Catholics are wanting to be cleansed, to be pure, to be in graces during Holy Week…why not have confessions four hours on Holy Thursday Good Friday and Holy
Saturday? It is a sacrament…we needs our sacraments! It appears all the special events
going on may be overwhelming for our priests therefore…not available for confessions.

I envision long lines (like in a pilgrimage) wanting to cleanse the soul and become once more in the graces–its time authorities reconsider; this period of denying the sacrament of reconciliation is not settling well with me.
