Out of interest…what is defined as a firm purpose of amendment (of course needed for a confession to be sacramentally valid). Is it valid if you only have intent not to commit more mortal sins, or do you have to have a firm purpose of amendment not to commit venial sins as well.

I have received conflicting information on different websites.

God Bless.

I would suspect we need to intend to do our penance, to amend our life, and to sin no more.

That would include all sin. In my opinion.

A “firm purpose of amendment” means you’re planning to “go and sin no more”.

If you’re planning on just committing venial sins, you don’t have a “firm purpose of amendment.”
