Hail Fathers??? 😃 I am not sure- I have never heard of that prayer before.

I’d just say 5 Haily Marys and 5 Our Fathers

What can I say? Since you ask so nicely Sherrie 😉

There’s really no set way of saying the prayers you’ve been assigned for penance.

It’s a very good idea to say them as soon as possible after confession though, so you don’t forget or get distracted or anything - preferably just kneel in one of the pews when you leave the confessional and say 'em.

If you’re at home, just pray them as you would normally pray at home.

Don’t forget to thank God for His gift of the sacrament of confession either way!

Hail Fathers hmmm I think thats the one that goes Our Father who are in heaven hallowed be thy name and blessed be the fruit of thy womb Jesus and lead us not into tempation but deliver us from evil now and at the our of our death amen…:D:p

Really? I thought it went ‘Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, holy Mary mother of God give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and pray for us sinners amen’ … 😛

Hi. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I apologize if it seems I don’t know as much as others, but I have health problems and it is has been very hard, but I love God and I love our church and it feels my soul. Godbless you and Thank you for your kindness. :angel1:

It seems your priest misspoke. He either meant to give you 5 Hail Marys or 5 Our Fathers. I’m sure this happens from time to time.

If you didn’t realize while in the confessional that what he said didn’t make any sense, where you could have asked him to repeat/clarify, then say either 5 of one or the other or 5 of both.

Remember, we should do our penance but absolution is not contingent on it. So, if you earnestly try to complete your penance then you are fine.

Hi. I thank you very much. You are kind to respond the
Lord is with you. Godbless you! Sincerly, Sherrie

Before the Amen, it ends "with liberty and justice for all."

Reminds me of a post, I think I read it hear long ago.

A child was upset coming out of the Confessional. Mom asked “what is wrong”. The child said “Father told me to say two Hail Marys as my pennance” - then burst into tears and said “and I only know ONE!”

Welcome to the forums, Sherrie!

“Hail Father”…

I pray the Rosary after I go to bed, and if I am nodding off, dreams creep in and it can get pretty weird. Sometimes the Hail Mary gets so odd that I just take a deep breath and end it with “Holy-Mary-Mother-of-God-pray-frus-sinners-now-an’-at-th’hour-of-our-death-amen. snorrrr…”

Now I can’t sleep without my Rosary in my hand!

God bless you,

Ruthie

Reminds me of a story… A previous pastor always gave one “Our Father” as a penance. You could have killed someone and burned the body…one Our Father. Anyways, I had taken my children to confession. After a few minutes, I looked over at them, and asked if they were ready to leave (after saying their penance). One of them looked at me and said, “I think I have about 58 more minutes.” Apparently he got the One-Hour Father. 😃

Priceless!!

My sister believes that Catholics pray “Holy Mary Mother of God, thy kingdom come thy will be done…” at Mass every week. She is extremely anti-Catholic. When I told my mother (also anti-Catholic) she had to laugh! 🙂

Hi. Thank you for your response. Your sister is close to one of our prayers- Our Father who are in Heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Tell your sister and mother I’m glad they had a laugh. As god says laughter is good for our souls as long as it means no harm. Godbless you and yours. Amen

Thanks!🙂 My mother and I had a good laugh…my sister didn’t. She HATES to be proven wrong!

Reminds me of Whoopi Goldberg’s great lines from Sister Act:

Bless us, O Lord, for these, thy gifts, which we are about to receive…and…yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of no food…I will fear no hunger. We want you to…give us this day our daily bread, and to the republic for which it stands. By the power invested in me I now pronounce us ready to eat. Amen.

Lord, I want you to forgive Willy and Joey, because they know not what they do. They’re only doin’ what Vince told 'em to do, because Vince is too chicken to do it himself! So he’s called upon these 2 men to take care of his business! So I want you to forgive them, Lord. Espectum, espertum, cacoomb, toutu, eplubium. Amen!

I was thinking of writing that! 🙂
