I am happy to know there is a lot of Confession going on in Seattle. In my own parish, the numbers are on the rise, praise the Lord! I attribute that to a couple of factors. For one, the sacramental preparation of children for their first Reconciliation demands the parents participate. Parents of my generation, who may have gone many years without Confession, return to the sacrament. The number of regular participants is rising. I also think it makes a difference how often it is actually available. Our pastor of 2 years is a very strong advocate of Confession (and rightly so!) and is eager to sit for Confessions as much as possible. He has never said no to me when I ask if he has a bit of time to hear my Confession (I have heard no from another pastor, much to my chagrine at the time)How very typical of the Seattle Times rag to find one of the most obscure Parishes in the city and do a story about Confession. I wish there was a way to email the author. I would tell her that Confession is alive and well in this city! I have actually been turned away several times after waiting in line for over an hour. I see lines at almost all the Churches in and outside the city. Several Parishes offer Confession more than once a week.
But of course the Times would never print an accurate article that truly reflects what is happening with the Church in Seattle.
Keep in mind that this is the paper that wrote such on offensive editorial (and accompanying cartoon) about the Church and the fight to allow pharmacists to refuse dispensing the morning after pill that our Arhcbishop wrote an angry letter to the author. I suppose they at least deserve a nod for publishing it.
On the other hand, I was discouraged this morning,as I am feeling in need of Confession, and with my schedule today, it’s going to be tricky for me to get to Confession anywhere. I went to the website for the diocese, and looked for any parish with a time that might work for me today or tomorrow. It seems everyone schedules Confession for about 4 pm on Saturday, for about half and hour. It would be pretty tough to hear the Confessions of everyone who wants to go, in a whole diocese, in the course of a half hour.
I wish parishes would offer a few more options as far as Confession times. That would help the numbers rise, imo…

Hi Sandra, it’s pretty much the same here with our parish. It’s gotten to the point where you have to make an appointment. Our weekly bulletin list only 30 minutes before Saturday vigil Mass & then the priest doesn’t show up till about 5 minutes before Mass.
But in defense of our 2 priest they do service 3 Churches (1main & 2 Mission). It does seem like no ones goes to confession any more. Two times a year they do when we have about 6 additional priest come in before Lent & Advent, the lines are very long. It is kinda hard for me to believe that we have so many saints walking around.
