Hello,

I’m planning on going to confession this weekend but I’m just extremely worried that I’ll be saying my sins wrong, I’ll forget about mentioning some sins, etc. I just want to make this a good confession and finally be in peace.

I haven’t gone to confession in almost 10 months I belive. I’ve been scared to do so.

I’m aware of comiting one mortal sin, of taking the Eucharist withought going to confession, but my mind tells me that I’ve done this more than once. Like I believe I was aware of it being a mortal sin once and the rest of the times I dont think I knew. This is how I remeber it: so before I wasn’t aware that you’re suppose to go to confession if you didn’t come to church the week before or if you masturbated (I know I feel really dumb now). So I think that I would still take the Eucharist without confession because I just wasn’t aware these were sins you would need confession for. Until one day I brought this conversation up with a cousin, and he said “you need to go to confession if you touch yourself”. I did some research and it was true, I ended up on a post about mortal sins / recieving the eucharist without confession. After that I belive I had just gone into confession and I was now aware that it was a mortal sin to do that. Church came around and I didn’t want to recieve confession because I had done so the week before and I was also embarasses because I kept thinking about what my parent would’ve said (something like “he just confessed last week”). So the it was time for the Eucharist and my parents were like “go recieve the Eucharist with your sister” and I didn’t want to say no so I did. I recieved the Eucharist with guilt and I refused to swallow it and I had skipped the Blood of Christ out of guilt also. At one point I did take the Body of Christ out of my mouth and placed it in my hand, I thought about throwing it away, but then I was like “How could I throw the Body of Christ away” so I placed it in my mouth again and swallowed it. I felt extremely guilty because I knew that what I had done was a mortal sin. I was just really scared of going into confession and that’s why it took me so long to do so.

Now I’m just worried I won’t confess correctly or I’ll miss something or so.

Like I just want to go ahead and tell the priest that I’ve comitted a mortal sin more than once because, I just want to be safe. But how would I tell him would I say “I’ve took the Eucharist in state of mortal sin” or “I belive I’ve comitted the same mortal sin more than once”, or 'I took the Eucharist without confession twice / more than once". I just don’t know because I’m not 100% sure it went like this, and I’m worrying about it so much.

Apart from that like I said before I’m scared of forgetting to mention a specific sin. I know I won’t forget to mention the big sins, such as mortal sin / masturabting / pornography / lust.

I looked up what sins you have to confess and found a huge list, so now I’m unsure apart from the above sins what other sins I have to confess.

I need any help anyone can give me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

It’s awesome that you are going to go to Confession! It’s a great source of grace.

My first piece of advice: Relax! Priests are—by and large—a great group of non-scary guys. 🙂 They love bringing God’s forgiveness and healing mercy to everyone who steps into the Confessional.

If you don’t know what to say and are unsure, just say that you are unsure and ask the priest for guidance. He’ll be happy to help you through and will ask you questions to guide you through the process.

Second, the only way that receiving the Eucharist is a mortal sin is if you receive it after having committed another mortal sin. So either, you have more than one mortal sin to confess, or you have none.

In any case, for a sin to be mortal, it needs to fulfill all three of the following: (1) it is grave matter; (2) it was committed with full knowledge of the gravity of the act; and (3) it was committed with complete consent (i.e. freely).

Because of your youth and ignorance regarding the sin of masturbation, it’s certainly possible that you did not have full knowledge, and thus the sin would not be mortal. (Of course, now you do know, so you would be held to a higher standard from here on out.) If the sin were not mortal, then receiving the Eucharist would not have been a mortal sin.

Honestly, though, I wouldn’t encourage you to spend a whole lot of time agonizing over whether or not the sins were mortal. In any case, you now know it is wrong, and you are sorry about it. That means your conscience is operating properly. Just go to Confession, get those sins wiped away, and you’ll be good to go! A fresh start!

I will say a prayer for you.

Exactly the same happened to me some time go,I went crazy…thinking of going to confess all on sunday…

Write all things on list.
Tell all that you write on the post to the priest.
I will pray for you, please pray for me for the similar confession on sunday.
I want to let go of past years.
And be at piece with Jesus!

I’m not sure I understand, isn’t not confessing and receiving the Eucharist a mortal sin?

Confess all,then take Eucharist.
Do detailed list and even eneter with it and read it.
If you dont remember something dont worry( humans nature is weak and imperfect)

Don’t forget to say at the conclusion “For these and all the sins of my past life, I am sorry”
Take an index card with you if necessary.
Be at peace. It’s not supposed to cause you grief. Your obvious contrite heart will see you through And when the priest absolves you, TRUST HIM.
God bless you. You wil do fine.

We are obligated only to Confess our mortal sins. Venial sins can actually forgiven in a few other ways (such as when we receive the Eucharist). Of course, confessing venial sins and going to Confession frequently even when we have no mortal sins to confess is still a good spiritual practice.

So if you commit a mortal sin (such as masturbation or unjustifiably missing Mass on Sunday), and do not confess it, then, yes, receiving the Eucharist would be an additional mortal sin.

But since you said you only have one mortal sin to confess, I took it to mean that perhaps you did not believe you had sufficient knowledge for those other sins to be mortal. Because the only way that receiving the Eucharist without going to Confession would be a mortal sin is if you had additional mortal sins that you also needed to confess.

I don’t wish to belabor the point and I apologize if I’m making it more complicated or confusing for you. If so, just ignore me, and go to Confession. Your priest will be able to help you through it far better than I can.
