Confession - How often

No matter how often I go, I know that I need to go more. I need His mercy. We all do.
 
I work 11PM to 7AM 😦 and one of the churches, in the town I work in has a 7:30AM mass daily with confession 15 minutes before EVERY mass, EVERY day, even Sundays 👍 👍 . This makes it easy to go to confession every week. The pastor, of that parish, feels weekly confession is great for the renewal of graces to help us in our daily lives, and I definetly agree. :yup: :blessyou:

I was wondering if you guys ever confess straight to God? Especially if you’ve had a horrible week or something were you’ve done dumb things daily and can’t make it to priest confession. Do you ever confess to God Himself? Can He not absolve you?

Only if the sin is venial. If the sin is serious (mortal), the Sacrament of Reconcilitation must be excercised. However, in my opinion, enough venial sin can lead to mortal sin since venial sin weakens our soul. I think that I would rather go to confession even for venial sins than to risk the chance of mortal sin. My opinion!

I would love to go weekly, as a devotion. But at my last confession, Father told me that I shouldn’t go more than once a month. He said that in my journey I am not wanting to sin and therefore won’t. (That’s being VERY optimistic!!😉 ) I told him my “sins” and that sometimes I felt that I had to stay away from receiving communion until confession because I didn’t want to offend our Lord. He then told me that I didn’t need to stay away from communion. Of course, he was just installed as the new pastor of the parish. But I feel the need to go at least every couple of weeks and especially before I am to be EMHC.

For me, the sacrament of confession is such a beautiful sacrament. So much healing takes place in the confessional. But I didn’t always feel this way. It has only been in the past 3 1/2 yrs that my attitude towards this sacrament has changed.

Devotional confession is not a bad idea, but it’s very easy to fall into laxity. If Father is telling you not to go more than monthly, you might ask him more in-depth why. Just because one doesn’t want to sin does not mean we do not sin. His advice might point to scrupulosity on your part. Or something else, I don’t know. I can’t imagine Jesus saying only come once a month if you’re desiring to go more often.

One time a Priest said to me, “Oh, you don’t have to worry about that.” without examining me further or asking anything about me. Well, HE might not have to worry about that sin in particular, but my conscience was convincing me otherwise. We promise in the Act of Contrition to, “sin no more and to avoid THE NEAR OCCASIONS of sin.” Firm amendment and purpose should be made also with venial sins, most especially when we pray the Confiteor or examine our consciences.

Father is right – don’t stay away from Communion, but what is your conscience telling you? The Holy Spirit is pointing at something, you might need a bit of direction. For example, if one is confessing repeat sins, how “firmly resolved” is one upon entering into the Sacrament? Every Sacrament is an encounter with Jesus Christ, that’s why you find such beauty in it, for our Lord is the Author of Beauty, Truth and Goodness. Whether you feel it or not, it is so. One cannot base Sacrament on feelings, they tend to run like the wind, hot & cold, high and low and everything in between. Please remember, also, that every MASS is a healing Mass, a time for healing . . . , “Lord I am not worthy…only say the Word and I shall be healed.”
 
It seems my mortal sins operate on a 30 day cycle… so I go monthly… my worst track record was just 2 weeks… 😦 my best was 53 days… I’m gonna beat that old record! 😛
 
2 weeks without mortal sin? I think that is amazing but I also think that your not searching enough for your sins.

Wow, that is rather amazing about the priest encouraging the Saturday confession.

I would like to go weekly too but sometimes there’s usually some obstacle or perhaps laziness on my part!

Interesting that a priest is encouraging weekly confession. I know that many priests encourage every two weeks to once a month. I think that it is really interesting that we don’t have more folks going to confession at least monthly.

It sure lifts a huge millstone from my shoulders when I have been and participated in reconcilliation.

Oh, I went two weeks without a mortal sin once. I don’t think it counts, though - I was in a coma in the hospital.😃

With all due respect…I dont think you should be telling me I aint searching my sins enough…INSTEAD…I think you need to reflect as to WHY you seem to think that someone going a mere 2 weeks (without) MORTALLY sinning is impressive …maybe YOU arent trying hard enough to NOT (mortally sin) perhaps? 😉

For (me) 2 weeks after going to confession and falling into MORTAL sin, is no excuse…again…for ME. Each person is different…if you feel great that you can go 2 weeks without mortally sinning, then Jesus knows for YOU that is a triumph… and eventually you will go longer and longer… I’ve been a revert for ten years…and seriously practicing my faith for over a year… I would hope I can ALWAYS go longer than 2 weeks before gravely sinning… for the record, I also include my venials in confession even though they are forgiven at Mass weekly. 🙂
 
Weekly. I don’t dare receive the Eucharist without first having a clean spirit.

You wouldn’t invite Jesus over for dinner and not clean your house, would you?

I suppose that would depend if my house were still clean ;). I’ve gone a while without sinning mortally (or even gravely) before. Remember that simply being at Mass cleanses us of venial sins.
 
I would go every month if I could but my “Catholic” parents don’t really believe in confession so I can only go if Confession happens to be offered when I am doing something with my youth group
 
I go once per month, and try not to go beyond 6 weeks to confess my sins. I love going, and really feel the grace of God come to my heart.

Yes and yes. Yes, I do confess straight to God and, yes, he can directly absolve me. However, Jesus gave the Apostles (mere men) the authority to forgive sins in His name. (John 20:19-23) Why would he do this if he did not intend for his followers to confess their sins to the leaders of the church he established? If you read the writings of the Early Fathers (those who were instructed by the Apostles and their immediate successors), you will find that they definitely believed in the Catholic practice of Confession and taught that it is the way Christ established as the normal means of obtaining forgiveness from our sins.

Does this mean that it is the only way? Of course not. However, I would be presumptuous to assume that God will forgive my sins if I deliberately avoid the means he himself established for receiving this grace. Therefore, If I were to find myself in the situation you described, I would certainly confess immediately directly to God and perform an act of contrition. Having done that, I would also resolve to get to Confession as soon as possible to confess the sin to one of his priests and receive his forgiveness in the way that he intended
 
I’m among the majority here, Confession once a month - but more often if the need arises and sometimes it definitely does!
