It really does not matter if their are two sides in the confessional because you cannot hear the other penitent.

As for confession, when you chose standing, you know that you are next and this method is much easier

I know people praying in the pews is complicated in knowing who should go next, I prefer the stand-up method.

God bless you and have a good Lenten Season

It is good to see from your post that there are plenty of people going to confession! If only that were the case everywhere in the Western world.

I was just going to say that I never see this queuing problem because generally when I go, I am the only one waiting for confession. Confession has become a thing of the past where people do not bother (including me until recently).

I sometimes go at the appointed hour only to find that the priest is not there.

I sympathize. I went to confession at our new parish and was like "wow, no liine! Lucky me. So I stood outside of the confessional and when I tried to go in about someone told me about all the people in the pews were in line ahead of me. The 25 icy glares was confirmation enough. They sit in the pews and move in a “s” like motion around until they are in the pew next to the confessional. It has always seemed awkward to me.

Lines people! They are human nature for a reason!!!
I think the sitting in pews works. I would follow it if it were there.
