How is the Sacrament of Penance celebrated in the Eastern Church?

In our church (Byzantine) the priest will sit behind the altar and open the door to the sanctuary to indicate he is available for confessions.

We go and sit next to him. He blesses us and waits for us to tell him our sins. He gives us advice and then places the stole over our head while he gives us absolution and a final blessing.

In case you’re wondering, even if there are people in the church, they can’t overhear what you’re saying. I know because I’ve sat in the front pew straining my ears to hear my husband’s confession and I can never hear a thing! 😃

Inside a confessional 😃

I think friend ConstantineTG is reflecting on the annoying practice in his parish… which we have practiced as well in my parish. In my parish it is not a “confessional” but a beautiful tiny chapel across the hall from the temple, none the less a separate room apart from the temple, a practice I hope will soon be changing for us.
The tradition is to stand before the icon of Christ God on the iconostasis, or before an analogion with the book of the Gospels, a kissing cross and an Icon of Christ God.

Our former wall of confessionals is now a long long storage closet. 😃
Ours do look like a good place to put the Christmas and Lent decorations for keeping

At this point it is not the most annoying practice in our parish. We have a new book given to us by the Bishops for use in English Liturgy and yet we keep going back to the old music sets. If only I can sing, I would cantor more than I would serve at the altar.
