Confession out of order?

I have a question about my confession I made. I did the “bless me…” and “it’s been this long since my last…” and “these are my sins:” and I said them by kind and number, then “for these and all of my sins I am sorry.”

Then he asked for clarification. And then he gave absolution. And then he gave counsel and penance.

Also, what am I supposed to say when the priest says “go in peace” or some variation of that? I’ve always said “Thanks be to God” because that’s what is said at Mass. I also always instinctively seem to thank the priest.

Well you could have said ‘see ya next time!’👍
 
I don’t think there is a prescribed answer. I always say “Than you Father” because he did the absolving.
 
Some priests will end with “Give thanks to the Lord for He is good.” The answer is “His mercy endures forever.” Then the priest usually says "Go in peace, " and I say “Thank you, Father.”

Must be universal then, I always say thank you Father, then head for door.
 
I always end my confessions by asking the priest to pray for me. They always promise they will and some ask for my prayers also. I have had others, in face to face confessions ask for my blessing. That is most humbling.

I do the same thing as you. If I go to confession face-to-face when I say “Thank you, Father” I shake his hand.
