Hi everybody,

I’ve decided to start writing papers about the catholic faith and then post my papers on social networking sites (like facebook), so i can help my non-catholic friends learn more about the faith. I am currently starting one on confession. I would like to know some common questions that people have about confession so I can answer them in the paper. Also, I would like to know where i can find good resources on confession. Any information will be helpful.

Congratulations on your endeavor.

I am a former Catholic and I can certainly provide a question that I think folks would ask with regard to confession in the Catholic church. These aren’t questions that I need an answer to - they are questions I’ve been asked as a former Catholic and also now as a Protestant:
  1. Why do I have to confess sins?
  2. Do all sins have to be confessed?
  3. What if I forget to confess a sin?
  4. Why do Catholics confess to priests?
  5. Can only priests absolve you from sin?
  6. How are people forgiven their sins in third world nations where there are no priests?
  7. What is the purpose of having to say X Our Fathers and X Hail Mary’s after confession?
That’s all I can think of off the top of my head…If I think of more, I’ll let you know.
 
I always say to start with the papers in the LIBRARY right here on Catholic Answers
 
May I suggest that you refer to the Catechism of The Catholic Church ( CCC ) starting with section 1423 which will give you answers to every sort of question that may be asked about Confession and Penance. You can use this to formulate and plan your paper. God Bless you and your endeavor.

Start with the terms “Reconciliation” and"Penance" might get you more information

It may be off trhead but what do protestants do about confession

They believe they can comfess to God himself and by saying God forgive me of my sins. That takes their sins away. That’s what I have been told by my protestant friends.
