I recently went to a shrine and went to confession during Mass. The priest gave me the rosary as penance. I prayed the rosary faster than ever so that I could recieve the Eucharist.I surely didn’t meditate very well but got in all the Hail mary’s and ending prayers and all. I know it wasn’t a proper rosary, because it was way too fast. If I hadn’t completed the rosary before taking communion, would I have been in mortal sin/sacrelidge by taking communion?

You don’t have to complete your penance before going to Communion. Your sin is absolved as soon as the priest says the words of absolution. Sometimes penances take much longer to do (I was given a whole book to read once). No one expects you to stay away from Communion all that time.

You could have received communion even if you had not done your penance before. You made your confession and were absolved of the sin(s). You could have received Our Lord and asked Him to help you make a good penance. One should do their penance as soon as they can after the confession, but, for example, if mass was going to start in 5 minutes, your penance could wait until after mass to be done properly, in your case it was a rosary and there would be no sin. I would say the rosary again and put more heart into meditation and the prayers and make the intension for your penance.
