I am doing some research for school regarding the apparently low number of American Catholics attending Reconciliation regularly. Without explaining all the info I intend to cover, I wanted to know whether an anonymous poll would be appropriate or inappropriate. No names or information about sins/penance/anything that goes on inside the confessional. I’ll mostly be asking in my poll if they are practicing or non-practicing, how often they attend Reconciliation, what their thoughts are on the sacrament, and maybe if they receive Communion regularly (though I’m a little edgy about this one, I could be toeing the line with that one). No one would be explicitly required to take this poll, so I’m not forcing anything on anybody.

Thoughts? I really want to get a good look at some living statistics besides what I find on the web, but if this is inappropriate than I am willing to back down.

I don’t think its inappropriate. I think it’d be a good reality check for all us catholics in america. I imagine the number will be surprisingly low, moreso then anyone might expect. It’s sad for me at mass to see people who receive communion then they go back to the pew, get their stuff and leave. They couldn’t stick around for the last ten minutes or so of mass. Really?

CARA, the national polling unit held in esteem and utilized often by the American Bishops (and occasionally for international polls) does studies like this all the time… so I would assume that you are good to go as well!
