Now I have decided to go to confession. First time in 20-22 years. What is the difference in going to the confessional versus face to fact confession - as far as procedure? Also, is face to face confession generally offered as option - reconcilliation room? Thanks!

Typically, when you walk in you can either kneel behind a screen or sit across from the priest. In the newer “reconciliation rooms,” the seated arrangement may seem more inviting and the screened area a little bit like hiding in the corner; while in the old confessionals (which have been renovated), the kneeler and screen may be more accessible and the chair seem a little awkward to get to. Just know that whatever you choose is just fine and Father will not be surprised by either. Procedurewise – same as always regardless of your choice.

No matter the sin(s), location or priest hearing the confession, you will come out feeling refreshed and have an overwhelming presence of the Holy Spirit. What a great feeling during Holy Week!

I know it was probably a typo but " face to FACT" made me chuckle. I had been away from confession for 25 years, that confession was done in a face to face confessional with an appointment made with the priest before hand, that would be my suggestion, give your parish a call and see if you could set up a confession with the priest, explain it has been some years since your last confession. It is Holy Week and priests are pretty much available all week long for confessions. Just a little clarification, it isn’t really as though the priest will be sitting directly across from you staring you down. I’ve never had a priest really even look up at me in a confessinoal until he was ready to advise on something. May God lead you straight to His font of Mercy, welcome home, and you will be making the angels sing. Praise God.

I would like to echo what maryj said, welcome home. It had been years (don’t really remember how many, maybe 15?) since I went to confession. I started going again a couple months ago. That first time, I just explained it had been a long time and stated my sins. There were no gasps as I listed them or anything like that. I don’t know who was happier after wards, the priest, seeing I have come to confession after so long or me for finally going.

Good luck and I am sure you will be glad you went, no matter if it is face to face or behind the screen.
