I was a very confused teenager and was raised catholic from the time I was born. I stopped going to mass after 8th grade and came back a year ago. I have been going to confession just about every week for a year. Tonight I remembered (for some odd reason) I let my dog lick my private for a split second when I was 14 or 15 and have never confessed this. I am really nervous/scared should I just confess this when I go to my next confession. Thanks alot and sorry for the question.

It would seem you just forgot to mention it, and not intended to hold it back. On the next time off or opportunity go to confession. Meantime you could say an act of contrition as part of your prayers and state you will confess it asap.

Don’t forget that Jesus is still on your side and also remember the times you didn’t submit to sin. These are your successes, they will keep you motivated. 👍

"…for these and all the sins of my past, I am truly sorry."

That sentence is part of the Catholic confession rubric. Don’t you think that statement covers all the transgressions you’ve previously committed, even those you’ve in all honesty forgotten to mention?

For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be met:

1 serious matter
2 full knowledge
3 complete consent (enough for it to be a personal choice)

Chances are if you allowed it to happen for a split second, you did not have complete consent.

Also, when you are contrite for all of your mortal sins, including the one’s you forgot, when receiving the Sacrament of Penance, all those sins that you were contrite for and would have confessed had you remembered them are forgiven. When they are remembered, they should be mentioned the next time you happen to go to confession.

So i ended up going to confession today and confessed that “during my younger teenage years my dog licked my private area for a second and I know this is a very disordered act and I am truly sorry for this.” Did I make the confession invalid by not stating that, " I let my dog…" or do you think the priest got the gist of what I was saying. Sorry for the awkward posts i just want to make sure i didnt make an invalid confession. Thanks everyone

I should also mention I tend to suffer from scruples from time to time. So do yall think this was a valid confession the priest gave me absolution and i said my penance though im just worried about how i worded my original confession(which is stated above).

I’m sorry but this is still irking me a little bit. Wouldn’t it be a burden on someone to keep this in the back of their mind after Jesus has forgiven him? He has freed you from your sins, even the ones you forgot to mention. Cannot one accept that and move forward, rather than move backward?

The priest understood you just fine and you are 100% forgiven of that sin. Smile and enjoy the love and peace of Christ…teachccd 🙂

I had a similar situation when I returned to the Church and made my “big” confession. I came back the next week and confessed some sexual sin or another, and the Priest knew it was me and said “You’ve already confessed you sexual sins” It’s not a good idea to dwell on them. You are very courageous to have said this. I have to say though, that you won’t be “free” (in your mind) of this until you confess it. That’s the beauty of Confession and many people just don’t realize. It isn’t enough just to talk to God as we normally do. We must “Whisper in the ear of Christ”, that is, the Priest.

Oh yes, you are definitely pushing the scruples line when you posted about the possible invalid confession. Your moving from Confession to self-flagellation. (whipping) You’re good. You’re also very very courageous. And you can bet Jesus is really pleased at this moment. I’ll bet the Priest was as gently as a lamb too right? God Bless!

The priest was very nice. I was very nervous when confessing this particular sin and your correct there is nothing better than hearing that your sins are forgiven. Though for some reason I had doubt in my mind that i was not forgiven because of the way I worded my confession, I felt as if I held back in some way by not saying “I Let” but now that I think of it how else could that scenario(which i posted above) have happened? Most people probably consider my way of thinking kind of ridiculous but i really do try to be as meticulous as possible when confessing my sins. I guess thats just me being scrupulous. I need to work on it. Thanks alot.

In a penitential atmosphere one is motivated to reconciliation. One’s focus is to advance payment that equals or betters the offense. Reservations that trivialize and impede direct resolution are suspect, as the element of pride is the enemy of the confessional, and may manifest in various ways.

On occasion although absolved the offender feels inadequate. He feels he is being called to do something more. These are positive forces that direct the offender down the road to peace of mind.
