Hi I was wondering if you have to go to church for ages or be a member to go to confession ?

Yes, you must be Catholic to go to confession.
About the only time this is different is when someone has been Baptised in the Trinitarian form (In the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit) in another denomination and is in the process of becoming Catholic. Then, shortly before receiving Confirmation & First Eucharist, the candidate would go to confession first.
I reccommend that you talk with a priest or the RCIA coordinator at your local parish for more detailed information.

Ordinarily, one has to be a baptized Catholic to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). One does not have to be a member of a particular parish in order to go to Confession there. A Catholic can go to any Catholic parish for the sacrament.
Also, there is no time requirement. It could be the person’s first trip to a Catholic church in 40 years, they can still go to Confession. It just may take them longer to get through everything.
If you have any questions about whether or not you would be “allowed” to go, I would encourage you to contact the priest and explain your situation. He will be able to point you in the right direction.
