I just got out of confession and realized I forgot to confess something. It’s my understanding that if it is truly forgotten then it’s forgiven, but you guys know a lot more than I do, so I wanted to get your opinions. I don’t know if the thing I forgot was a mortal sin. I obtained someone’s password, and I let my suspicions get the better of me and tried to log in their account, for no reason other than being nosey (it didn’t work anyway). I know it was stupid and really just dumb, but being a bit scrupulous, I’m wondering if this is something that is just forgiven, or if I need to go to confession just for this, or if I should just mention it next time. Any help would be Appreciated, because I don’t want to be in a state of mortal sin.

If it was truly forgotten, then it was forgiven. However, you should mention it at your next confession so that you receive God’s grace to avoid such a thing in the future.

No one on this site can declare what you did to be a mortal sin; we entrust that decision exclusively to God.

Yes, any sins you forget to mention during the confession are forgiven (but have to be mentioned during the next confession). The rite of confession in Lithuanian even includes the words “Daugiau nuodėmių neatsimenu, gailiuosi ir žadu pasitaisyti …]” (more or less “I do not remember any more sins, I am sorry and I promise to improve [avoid them] …]”) as a reminder of that (I am not sure if anything like that is supposed to be in the same rite in English).

There is no point whatever in holding back in confession - if you deliberately withhold a known sin, the damage to your soul will remain, so you’re just kidding yourself, and God knows it.

As noted above, truly forgotten is forgiven.

I sometimes struggle with things like this - specifically, I worry that maybe I didn’t just innocently forget, I (subconsciously or not-quite-so) “forgot” because I didn’t want to confess it. Rather than spending hours freaking out about it and worrying…just take it back to Confession the next time you’re going to go.

It’s probably OK to go get back in line. 🙂
