Recently I went to Confession last Sunday for some mortal sins. There was a new priest in the parish (not replacing the current one, but just staying there instead). When I went to him for Confession, he only said “May God absolve/forgive you of your sins” and that’s it. I listened to a Jimmy Akin podcast saying that it’s possible that if the proper form isn’t used, the absolution wouldn’t be valid. So I went to another priest that I knew gave me proper absolution before. I explained to him the situation, and he only prayed the beginning prayers and again did not include the part which includes “…and I absolve you of your sins”. I’ve been praying and really worried that I’m not properly absolved. What should I do?

When you go to the surgeon-doctor are you giving hints?
Is it your business to judge priests or to be a penitent?
Did you do any course of theology or are you a Theology Teacher of the Subject “Sacraments” to judge on that?.
Mind your own business which is to correct your ways and ask for God’s forgiveness and let the priest do his job.
You will be at peace.
God Bless You.

Given the way some priests like to change words, which can invalidate certain things, this is something people should be concerned about. I watched a video of an invalid baptism simply because at no point did water touch the baby’s head.

The Priest here seems to not have done his job…so he needs to go to another Priest.

Most Priests do their job…but some well some had not good formation at some particular place or time …and some are old and forgetful etc etc.

One of my professors when was at University studying Theology told the story of being on vacation with his family. He and his nephew went to a church for confession (note HE was a Priest). He went in first. When he got to the absolution the Priest did not use the form but did what the Priest above did basically. So he said to the other Priest --Father those where not the form of absolution. The Priest responded --oh – then how does it go? So he lead the Priest step by step …sentence by sentence through them and he repeated them after him. He told the class jokingly then -I did not know if he was absolving me or I was absolving him! He then took his Nephew elsewhere…

Now again …most know what they are doing …but on occasion one gets one who does not…or for some reason does not give the the proper absolution (I had a elderly Priest have a senior moment – the blessed me instead --I right away corrected him and he apologized and gave me absolution).

In this case – go to another priest…
I agree.

The church has given clear directions for carrying out the sacraments. If not followed they are invalid because the church is the care keeper of the sacraments. The priest is the administrator of the church and must be careful and be faithful to that charge, and ignorance and carelessness is no excuse. Apparently some have a problem with obedience or training.

Pray for them.

Should the person who is on surgery being worried how the surgeon works?
Should a person in a plain go to the cockpit so judge how the pilot works?
I mean, it never crossed my mind to see what the priest is doing!!! As you are watching him, you are not doing what you should do. pray the act of contrition and ask God for forgiveness and think on how to correct your ways.
Sorry, 99% of penitents do not have a course on Theology. so, they are not able to judge on sacraments. It happens that I have 4 years of Theology and I know what I am talking about. Theology is not like eating an apple, it is a hard course to take!

Now is the video. The baptism was valid and you do not have the key to the Kingdom of Heaven to prove otherwise. The video and the camera and lights play tricks. Are you sure that not one molecule of water touched the baby’s head? One molecule is enough and molecules you cannot see them. But God can.

Please, do not let our religion be a religion of scrupulosity. God is Great
God is not a God of Formulas.

Then, let us discuss at that level.
I have 4 years of theology and 5 of philosophy.
Tell you: that is the most ridiculous thing your Teacher did. So much that he was doubting who was absolving who.
Jesus shouted violently against a religion based on formulas and not on the spirit. The priest had the intention of absolving so the absolution was done.
What about if the priest absolved in other signs which had different significants for the same meaning? Would it be necessary for Your Teacher to learn Chinese if He receive the absolution in Chinese?

Now, let’s do the reverse: what about an absolution where the priest said the exact formula, spelling it carefully with the lips but (out of something, for instance, hate for the person who was a penitent, who was an enemy of the priest or who killed the priest’s father or who was betraying the priest) had absolutely NO intention of forgiving the sins of the penitent. Would the penitent’s sins be forgiven?

I am not going to enter on the solution of this moral case.

What I am saying that the FORMULA is not everything.

Stephen Hawking had a robots who speaks for him. Is He speaking?

I think we are complicating too much things and this leads to scrupolosity. Now, in mass, I must watched for the formula of the Eucharist, in Baptism for the formula of Baptim, in the Oining of Sick, for the formula, and even when the priest is ordained, watch carefully if the Bishop is saying the correct formula that I do not know.

This leads to a crazy life !!!

Let’s trust in God and God will trust us…

No valid form --no valid absolution.

Period.

Sacraments require valid matter and form.

Such is the teaching of the Catholic Church founded and given the authority to teach and to bind and loose by Jesus Christ.

Now can it happen that a illicit form is used that is still valid --yes that could happen. (the illicit form should not have been used of course…).

My Professor was completely correct.

As for when he said regarding he did not know if he was absolving me or I was absolving him - was said in jest. At that point it was the other priest absolving him.

Really? Well, I wouldn’t have been able to tell that- given all the heterodox things I’ve heard you say on these forums. Correct me if I’m wrong… but your approach to religion seems to be YOUR approach. You don’t seem to care much about how the Church works, but moreso how you think it should work. That’s just what I’ve observed… correct me if I’m wrong.

In my faith life, I’ve learned that I’m not an authority on anything. The Church is the authority, either I conform my life to the Church’s teaching, or I might as well just go to a New Age religion, or become a secularist.

Even on this thread… there is a point where the priest HAS in fact messed up. One time I went to confession and I was given no penance.

There’s a fine line between having a problematic priest, and succumbing to the Donatist heresy. If the priest is elderly or perhaps forgetful, then it’s probably the Donatist heresy. If the priest thinks he needs to make confession less intimidating so he always does it drastically different than he’s supposed to… then you have a problematic priest.

Lastly, I bolded the “I think” because a lot of what you post boils down to: “I’m a doctor, I have a unique view because of my experience, so I’m going to share that view here”. Shouldn’t you try to express the Church’s view, and not your own?

The priest held the baby by the shoulders and dunked him into the font feet first, not even up to the shoulders. There was no water even near its head.

We should not engage Pfaffenhoffen.

Believe me, I was tempted to. But I read further. Obvious troll.

To the OP: you are completely right to be concerned. You should find a priest who will use the correct formula.

The priest held the baby by the shoulders and dunked him into the font feet first, not even up to the shoulders. There was no water even near its head.
I understand the concern --since normally a baby is baptized by infusion in the Roman Rite on the forehead (such is the proper place).

Water was being used here and I imagine the right form was used with the right intention.

I could not say that such would be per se invalid. Sounds like they were baptizing by immersion and only immersed part way… I have not been to a baptism of a baby by immersion.

Of course the Church would be the final judge.

Ummmmm.
So the baby was in the water. So what?
In many baptisms, the method is the full immersion, specially in adults: we are not going to immerse the baby totally or otherwise the font was shallow.
The shoulders up are the person, the shoulders down are not?

I have no interested on talking about me. Simply you said that you have theological studies, so i said mine. Forget about what I said.

I wonder who, for you, is the Church!
I am not the Church, I guess that none of the 1 billion Catholics is the Church.
So who is the Church? I cannot say the Church’s view without knowing who, for you, is the Church.

So, I am heterodox, and you are orthodox? I do not correct you, maybe you are right, maybe I am heterodox simply I am surprised for such a sweeping judgement…

Up to now, I am expressing my own views and I tell everybody that what I say are my own views. So I am surprised that you say that I tell my own views when I state that what I said are my own views.

As for the views of the Church, I let the Pope take care of it. It is in good hands. No. I am too small to say the Church’s doctrine. When I want to know the Church’s teachings, I go for the great Doctors of the Church, to the Councils, to the Popes.

Me, the official teaching. Come on, I am a nobody !

But I think, what can I do and as far as I think, I tell my views till the day the authorities of the place, the Moderators, kick me out. God gave the a head to think and a heart to feel and up to my death, I will use them at His service.

As for the frail priest, either he is able to hear confession and I suppose he knows what he is doing or he is out of his mind and cannot find the way so he would not be there.

I remember the beloved Pope John Paul II, in his last years, the effort he did do go to the end. I never watched for his correct words in 70 languages. I watched his bravery, his courage in the midst of suffering, his love for His people. I miss him.

To bring here the old extinguished heresies like the Donatism, isn’t it too much?

Even a priest deprived of faculties for hearing confession can forgive sins!

But you did not answer my question: is your business to correct priest or do our job as a faithful in the audience? And if the priest does not say the Eucharistic formula as you think it should be done, you should go up and correct him?

Moreover, you do need penance to have your sins forgiven. So what? Maybe your are such a good person that the priest thought that you did not deserve not even the smallest penance…🙂
