Hello,

I have been going to Confession regularly, but since my last Confession this week, I have had some past sins weighing on me. I have not intentionally omitted the sins at Confession; for whatever reason they just did not come to mind until now. I am not sure if they are mortal sins or not. There may have been some instances of it being mortal, although I feel those would have been quite a while ago, and I cannot remember if I confessed them or not because they were several years ago.

I did confess this type of sin at a Confession before this last Christmas, although at that Confession I think I was primarily thinking of one instance of it in particular. I have not committed this sin since that time.

Do you think I should confess this type of sin at my next confession or am I okay? Do I need to go to Confession before receiving Communion again? I just want to ensure I am in a state of grace to receive it at mass, because I have been receiving regularly.

Thanks and God bless you all!

Do you think it is necessary for me to go to Confession before my next Communion though, or am I alright waiting?

Thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut by the way.
As long as you haven’t intentionally omitted them, you should be okay.

It can’t hurt. Just do it, I think you will feel better that way.

Go up and receive Holy Communion. Even the sins you forgot to mention were forgiven at your last confession. Simply mention them in your next regular confession.

Never ever stop receiving Communion unless you are absolutely certain of being in a state of mortal sin.

If you did not deliberately omit to confess a mortal sin, then you are fine, because Christ’s absolution is full and complete.

Since even in a state of sanctifying grace it is natural to us to commit venial sins, we admit to the Lord, before receiving Communion, that we are not worthy that He should enter under our roof. But the Church teaches that the Body and Blood of Christ cleanse us from venial sins.

Now I want to call your attention on something you said:
I am not sure if they are mortal sins or not.
If that is the case, you are not guilty of mortal sin. Even if you find out later that what you did is grave matter, and even if you did it with deliberate consent, you did not - and do not - have full knowledge of that being or not a mortal sin, so you are not guilty of mortal sin.

That is my humble opinion on the basis of what the Church teaches, but you are bound to what your confessor will say on this matter. You should talk to a priest - even in confession - and bring this matter to his attention (remember that in Confession the priest is acting not as himself, but in persona Christi), but if you confessed already and if you are not aware of having committed any mortal sin, then for the love of God, receive Holy Communion! The Beloved awaits!

That was my thinking at Mass yesterday, but I will try to go to Confession soon anyway. As someone else said, it can’t hurt. Thank you for your help.

I would not put it quite that way…though some certainly can be confused and need particular direction from say their confessor.

But here is the guidelines from the USCCB:

Perhaps. Such may be the case.

The person needs to judge according to the criteria. Their confessor can also give some light for them in their case.

Thank you for your thoughtful answer! At the time of these sins several years ago, I knew what I was doing was wrong, although I did not think of it as a mortal sin. To be honest, back then I didn’t think of mortal sin and it’s relation to Communion much at all. I thought what I was doing was just something a group of young people do together for fun and that it was the norm. I rationalized it to myself as well by thinking that I wasn’t doing anything that bad and that other pele my age were probably doing much worse.
