I know that I need to go to confession but my heart is very hardened and I don’t feel the sorrow for my sins that I know I should feel. Should I wait until I truly feel sorry to confess? I realize that I have no guarantee that I will live long enough to get to another confession (no ones does) but confessing because I’m “supposed to” somehow feels wrong. 🤷

You can make an act of the will to hate and to regret your sin, to actively reject it because of the great damage it does to your soul, and to never commit sin again with the help of God’s grace. This is a* decision*, informed by intellect; it is not necessarily an emotion or a feeling.

Consider the person who gets up early in the morning to go for a light jog. They may not feel like it but, for health reasons, they decide to take their exercise anyway. So it is with attrition and its relationship to confession. Sometimes, our attitudes need to be adjusted, and this is something that we must choose. A new attitude won’t simply hit us over the head one day without our conscious willing of it.

Pray to God and say, Jesus, I trust in You and I love You, and this is why I will to do what You say. But I can do absolutely nothing without You. Please increase my trust and my love, and give me sincere contrition for my sins.

When you humble yourself, and will to obey Jesus despite difficulties, He will most surely give you the graces you need.

You need not wait on your emotions. There is an overemphasis on the word “feel” today, I think. Knowing that something was displeasing to God and wishing to be forgiven for displeasing God and to avoid doing so in the future is sufficient, whether or not you’re particularly sad about your actions or not.
