Is the priest always supposed to give penance? I went to one priest that did the absolution (is that word? 🙂 ), but didn’t give me a penance.

I’m just wondering if it was an oversight (we were in a discussion about a problem), or if they have the option NOT to give penance.

The “official rulebook”, so-to-speak of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, called the Rite of Penance, requires that the priest assign a penance, though it does not specify its severity. Even though this is the case, penance is not required for absolution (you are absolved even before you perform your penance). If your priest forgot to assign one, simply make an act of penance which you feel is appropriate to the gravity of the sins you confessed.
