Confession question

So I recently made an appointment with our parish priest for confession, I went and it was face to face in his office and I confessed quickly but the priest instead of counseling me began a conversation I live in Mexico and when he heard me say I was from the USA he began the conversation we ended up talking about an hour he seemed shocked I knew bible verses off the top of my head, or that I knew who Saint Teresa of Avila was Ned that I’d read her works, he actually said he had never met such an impressive, well educated woman before and I quickly told him we’d been speaking for an hour that I needed to pick up my children t school could he absolve me and give me my penance which he did but he also said he’d like to speak to me again is this normal? I’ve only ever dealt with dry, stand offish priests in my short time as a Catholic so I’m wondering if speaking to priest sis ok or not?

It’s perfectly ok to have conversations with the priest. That said, during confession is not the time for those talks. Maybe the priest just needed someone to talk to that day and got carried away. I would assume that’s what happened. I have had many conversations with our priests and almost always find them interesting and enlightening.

Since you are in Mexico and you made an appointment to have your confession heard, the priest likely thought you wanted to have the luxury of more time than would be possible in the period when he hears confessions regularly according to the parish schedule. This is especially the case when people either are seeking spiritual direction or making a general confession.

I am sorry you relate you have only dealt with priests who are dry and stand-offish. I have assuredly not found most of us to be like that.
