Pete, if it is something serious and eating at you, yes you should so you can be forgiven and be at peace about it. Be sure to explain it the way you did above, your confessor will understand. In preparing for my most recent confession I was bothered about whether I had confessed something I should have a long time ago, but wasn’t sure about, so I confessed it just that way and my pastor was very understanding. (He is a very close personal friend, and what I confessed I’m not proud of at all and he made it easy for me. We remain even closer personal friends now.)

Just tell the priest - “Father, I am truely unsure whether or not this happend, but I am sorry if I did commit these sins (then tell the sins).”

If someone was intoxicated and did not remember what happened, and someone else told him that he did something while he was intoxicated, would he need to confess what the person told him he did (even though he did not remember doing it), or would he just need to confess being so intoxicated that he may have done things he has no recollection of doing?

The fact of getting oneself drunk or intoxicated needs to be confessed. Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, we should not get ourselves intoxicated. And, yes, whatever bad behavior as the consequence of intoxication need to be brought up in confession also.

I understand that intoxication is sinful. My question is if one is to confess something that he does not remember doing (which he may or may not have done–he heard about it from someone else but it cannot be verified as actually happening). For instance, the other person may not be telling the truth. If one does not remember doing something and somebody else claims he did it, does it need to be confessed?

Confess it. Give it to Jesus. We don’t if it is necessary or not because you don’t know. Better to receive healing and move on.

I understand that intoxication is sinful. My question is if one is to confess something that he does not remember doing (which he may or may not have done–he heard about it from someone else but it cannot be verified as actually happening). For instance, the other person may not be telling the truth. If one does not remember doing something and somebody else claims he did it, does it need to be confessed?

If there is ample evidence that one has done it then yes, confession would be in order. A person could certainly express to the priest the circumstances of not being able to remember and whether the source is trustworthy or not. I’d still confess it. Especially if there is serious evidence like a picture or video.If you drive drunk and kill 5 people in a terrible accident which wipes out your memory you are still going to jail. You are still responsible.

if it is so vague in your memory you don’t even know if it happened it cannot possibly be a sin, which requires not only sinful matter, but full knowledge and full free-will consent. If you have periods where you lose track of what you are doing, that is a concern that should be addressed. responding to title of this thread, the proper place for confession questions is in the confessional, and the proper person to ask is the priest.

I was referring to a situation where there was no clear evidence, just hearsay.

LAK611, while Puzzleannie’s advice is sound, what is presumed is the person understands that putting themselves into the situation by becoming drunk, especially to the point of blackout, is seriously sinful. That’s the sin that needs to be confessed even if the other allegations are not credible.
