Okay, I might derail the thread by saying this, but let me try: I think it upsets people because specifically we have evolved a broken concept of participation. The ‘new’ Mass is characterised by lay participation by visible and active means. Whilst the Council commended lay ‘participation’ in this manner, I do not think it was ever envisaged that we forget the internal participation that has always been a part of being present at Mass.I don’t see why this upsets people so much. I do think that the NO Mass emphasizes the participation much more than the EF did, and that perhaps people used to have a different idea of what they were doing when they were at Mass.
