Say one goes to confession on Friday and commits a sin Friday night, is it o.k. to go to confession on Saturday or is that a bit overboard and scupulous?

go for it. i think that when your conscience whispers ‘get to confession’ into your heart… it’s best to follow it. it’s not like you stole an extra toothpick from the diner after dinner and you run to confession… a mortal sin needs forgiveness… so go get it.

Indeed, I agree, get there as soon as possible…also be aware of something. You MUST have a contrite heart and you MUST also have a frim purpose of ammendment…meaning you intend to avoid the sin as much as possible. If you go in their knowingly with the intention of commiting the sin again the next day or later on that night. Then you are wasting you time…neverthe less…YOU NEED TO GO!--
Especially, if the stiuation is a sexual sin, as most of us guys tend to have to deal with, especially if it becomes habitiual, I hope that is not the case with you------anyways, GO GO GO!God Bless you

If you’ve committed a mortal sin (or any sin) and are truly contrite, then of course go.Indeed, I agree, get there as soon as possible…also be aware of something. By the way, guys are not the only ones who have to deal with sexual sin :nope: … but I can say in my own case that regular and frequent confession and daily Mass as often as possible has helped more than I could hope for

I’ve done it often. Go for it. But remember your contrition must be genuine in order for the sacrament to be effective.

He was surprised to see me again, but I had to confess my sin, because I thought it was a mortal one, and I couldn’t receive God’s body with it within my soul!

In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, I had confessed before Holy Communion (it’s done either before or during Mass), but then just before Communion, I remembered something else that I didn’t confess and I didn’t allow myself to accept Communion. After Mass, I went up to the priest and told him that I forgot to mention something during confession and asked for another confession. After then, the priest had then given me Communion.

Obviously, it is never overboard to go to confession when you have a mortal sin to confess. For the general case, talk to your confessor.

The one idea that the Catholic Church stresses is that you can receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation as much as you feel the need to. If you feel the need to go to confession, there is no reason not to. If you commit a mortal sin, I would strongly suggest to go to Confession as soon as possible and mention that mortal sin. To answer question, no, you can never go overboard on the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

If you truly forgot unintentionally something, then another confession would not have been necessary.

During confession, I always end with ‘I am sorry for these and all the sins of my life’ just in case I have forgotten something. This is perfectly acceptable as long as you are not omitting something on purpose. There have been many, many times when I have left the confessional only to recall something I forgot to confess.

I finish up with “these and all my sins” because we only have so long in there.
Nevertheless, it is a sacrament of healing. Sometimes the stain hurts, even if it is not mortal, and it needs attention sooner rather than later. The major concern to the contrary is to avoid becoming scrupulous or self-absorbed. Taken together, these are good reasons to find a good and holy confessor and to take his advice with regards to frequency and when to make exceptions.

This is good advice, but not advice for someone who is suffering from scrupulosity. Such a person needs to follow the orders of his regular confessor in this matter.

Why not? It might be less humiliating to simply not commit the Friday night sin though. After all, the purpose of confession is to remind you that you’re supposed to be sorry for wrongdoing. Hopefully it’s not just a joke. You can’t be too well meaning if you do something wrong again so shortly after leaving the confessional. I’d chalk this one up as a “valuable lesson for thought” about how seriously God may take you and how he may feel when you kick him in the face, say your sorry, and then do it again that night with little if any reluctance.
