I went to my parish yesterday to make a confession. I found that the Archdiocese had just suspended all sacraments and services. Being the Easter season and being in the high risk age and compromised health demographics that COVID19 is most affecting, I am worried. So how does someone seek the forgiveness that is offered by Jesus through the priest when you cannot access that sacrament? Blessings and thanks in advance. Bruce

Make an appointment with your parish office for confession.

And use the search feature and you will find 7 threads discussing this. 😉

Praying for your intention. God’s forgiveness is always available, even outside the Sacrament. Pray Psalm 51. God is looking for a broken and contrite heart.

If you are very concerned, please call your priest. While he can’t hear your confession over the phone, he might might be able to tell you whether your sins are mortal or venial over the phone.

If mortal & ugent, Father might ask you to come over for confession (he could do an open air confession 6-10 feet apart (like others have done). You never know… so call.

BTW - one small point of correction. We are not in Easter Season. We are in Lent. Easter Season starts after sundown on the Easter Vigil and lasts until the Vigil of Pentecost.

God Bless

Call your parish or Diocese.

While public masses are cancelled here in my Diocese, Confession behind the screen is not only happening at regular but in extended times.

Here Confession is face to face. Confessional use is banned because of the risk of having your face close to where the last penitent had his moments ago. It makes sense, though I prefer the screen.

I’ve checked on the two churches offering confession, and have decided that when I’m due to go again, I will use Church A that normally uses a room for confessions, as my guess is they will just put two chairs six feet apart in there and have at it. The other church offering them, Church B, normally uses tiny little antique confessionals and whether you go face to face or behind the screen, you will be too close to the priest. They will likely have to make some other arrangement as Church B is very old and doesn’t have rooms to go have the confession in, and I’m not really in the mood to deal with more change. Church A also has two confession times while Church B only has one.

Yeah, our archbishop has also banned confessionals for the duration of the emergency, BUT His Grace stipulated that a portable screen should be set up in an open area for those who prefer it. He has instructed priests to continue celebrating Masses - Sunday and daily - but congregation sizes will be restricted to 50 persons…so I’m assuming “first come first served”.

My church has announced that they’ll do some kind of outdoor drive-up confession, but they haven’t worked out the details yet. We have an amazing Pastor and an amazing Parochial Vicar (who cover 2 churches and 2 schools) and I know they will do whatever it takes to look after their flock. This morning at 8am they’ll have the first “live” Mass on Facebook for the Solemnity of St. Joseph.

Our two churches will be open (at least for the time being) during the day so that people can go in to pray, with the numbers of people strictly enforced.
