Hi! So Yesterday, I went to confession then I told the priest my sins esp “I promised to God, and I realized I can’t do it so I want to take it back” so the priest said to me, “what kind of Promise?” instead of telling him what I really promised to God, I just gave an example which is (sort of) similar to what I have promised.

Did I do something wrong not telling him exactly what I’ve promised to God?

Yes we should not promise, Jesus said in Matthew 5:37 Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one. to God your confessing to Jesus, Priest is only a representative, standing in the person of Christ,if you feel your conscience is disturbed, just confess it to another Priest,to keep your mind at rest, next time do not promise anything, just say Yes or No,and to God keep making decisions or resolutions since Jesus is your best friend, keep talking to Him and share every single thing which happened on daily basis, build a personal relationship with Jesus and Mother Mary,Patron saints, God Bless

No, you did nothing wrong since he asked “what kind of promise,” you gave him an example.

I don’t know what promise you wanted to take back, nor do I want to. If the priest asked, I would assume it is to help you more or to understand the situation. If your explanation was a truthful representation of the ‘kind of promise’, I see nothing problematic. If it bothers you, mention it to him at or before your next confession.

I know certain serious oaths to God, if one wants dispensation, one can be dispensed by the parish priest. But if it was a promise that was small and really too much expected of you, you need not worry. I would just pray to God and tell him you made too much of a promise, God understands and knows. Hopefully the priest helped you.

You should definitely have told him exactly what is was, unless you said what you said was an example.
The best policy is to answer the questions a priest asks you in confession as truthfully as possible. That way he can help you more.
