there is no such thing as communal confession, the only way to have ones sins absolved is through indvidual confession to a priest. There is a communal penance service, with is a time of prayer to prepare for the sacrament, which includes individual confession and absolution, and your parish will probably offer those during Lent and Advent, if not other times of the year. trouble is unless several priests are present, not everyone gets the chance to confess.
There is also general absolution of an entire group w/o individual confession, used only in times of grave need such as war, natural disaster etc.
I understand what your point, but I wouldn’t put it quite that way.
Well…we do have a sort of “communal confession” at every mass, the Penitential Rite:
All: I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
All: Amen.
So is this just a wish “Let’s hope God forgives us” or a form of absolution? I’ve always been a little confused about that.
