Hey I have a question that I need help on. I am 19 and love the catholic faith and am a catholic. I go to church every sunday and pray to god to forgive me for the sins that I commited in the past week and to help me to lessen my sinning and grow closer to him. The problem is I haven’t been to confession in two years cause I guess I am slightly uncomfortable and feel ashamed at this point in my life. I know confession is central to catholic faith but is the above way I ask for forgiveness acceptable? and should I still go to communion?
P.S. I believe in confession though.
 
patrick, you should not be going to communion if you believe that you are in a state of mortal sin. Otherwise, an additional sin (sacrilege) will be committed. If you don’t want to wait until regularly schedule confessions, and/or want to discuss or question the seriousness of your sin, you can make a weekday appointment with an available local priest.
 
You need to go to confession, and don’t receive Communion else you have something more to confess. Praying for forgiveness out of perfect contrition can absolve you for your sins in and of itself. However, one of the requirements of perfect contrition, is that you yourself want to go to Confession as soon as possible. So if you make a perfect contrition and then die before being able to go to Confession, you will still be forgiven. But you are choosing not to go to Confession and therefore your soul still retains your sins.

I’m a Catholic convert and made my first Confession not so long ago. I had mortal sin on my soul and I remember how humbling and hard it was. My voice was trembling, hand shaking - it was just really had. Luckily the priest recognized this and comforted me to help me make the Confession. And after that Confession I felt so relieved I had done it. It’s so humbling. The difficulty of confessing sins should exist because it is a sign that you are truly sorry. If you continue to not go to Confession you’re saying you’re not willing to be humbled, and maybe humiliated inside, for God to receive the precious sacrament of His mercy. But we should all have a sense of humility of our sins and never should we reject God’s infinite mercy.

Yes I’ll be praying for you as well. Pray for the Lord’s courage, it is all about that strength which can only be derived from the Lord.
 
Thanks a lot everyone appreciate the prayers and advice. So just to clarify I should not go to Communion until I go to confession, even though I asked God for forgiveness? If you guys answered this already sorry for maybe not completly understanding:)
I will look back on here later got to go to mass

Yes, do not receive Communion until you have been absolved of your sins in Confession.

That is correct. Praying for forgiveness without intention of going to Confession is Protestant thinking which is in error. I was a Protestant before converting.
 
Trust me, compared to many Catholics, two years is a drop in the bucket. It’s amazing how many practicing Catholics haven’t been to confession in decades, let alone years. You shouldn’t feel ashamed about that length of time but please do go to confession in order to set things right again and get back into a state of grace.
