hello all,

I might have committed the sin of presumption when thinking it would be okay to make a certain comment (I say might have, because I really don’t know what was going through my conscience at the time). I confessed it today, but just said “presuming forgiveness”. I didnt say about what. does it count that I confessed it? I dont even recall if presumption happened at all…

God bless
Jonathan

You are absolutely forgiven through the priest’s absolution. All venial sins, whether confessed or not, are forgiven through confession; only mortal sins need to be confessed directly and in sufficient detail.

Regardless of whether a sin is mortal or venial, if the priest felt your confession on a given sin is too vague, he would ask for more details. He did not, so please feel at peace knowing the the sin (if there even was one) is forgiven.

thanks underacloud. does it matter that I didn’t confess in “number”?

No.

Only grave/mortal sins need be confessed in number. But even if you neglect this, the priest is there to ask any questions they need to understand the sin. Be guided by the priest and trust that God offers his forgiveness through him.

okay. so as long as I am sorry, and I named the sin, even if I didn’t confess in number (because I forgot I had to!) then I am forgiven. Good, because I received the Eucharist right afterwards. thanks.

It is only unconfessed mortal sins that preclude us from receiving the Eucharist. Nothing about what you describes suggests mortal sin. You seem to doubt whether any sin occured, let alone mortal.

It sounds like you may be overly scrupulous and need to learn to trust more in the absolution offered to you when you make a contrite, sincere confession. The most important aspects of confession on your part are contrition and honesty. The priest can help you with the technical issues, and will do if they feel they need to. If you have questions about confession, perhaps make an appointment with a priest to talk this through.

thank you very much. I just wish I could stop worrying!
