Went to confession today and I feel great! šŸ™‚ I have a question though, the priest who was there had a ring on his left ring finger. He is a visiting priest from Africa. I know priests are not supposed to be married but was just wondering if anyone had any ideas?

It may be that they have that custom thereā€¦or it was a rosary ring etc.

Men can become married and then become priests within the Catholic Church! In the Latin Rite this practice is limited to converts (such as Anglican ā€˜priestsā€™ who convert and want to continue their ministry). Furthermore, there are entire Rites and sui juris Churches that allow for married men to become priests.

So he might be of a different Rite or sui juris. He might have been an Anglican and converted. Or he may wear it to symbolize his marriage to the Church.
 
One of our elderly priests who helps out occassionally wears a wedding ring. That is because he was married and had a couple of kids. He didnā€™t become a priest until his wife died and his children were grown and away from home. As I understand from what he had previously mentioned, there was a window of opportunity when this was allowed and he just happened to be there at the right time.
 
Some priests wear a ring as a symbol of marriage to the church. My priest friend who is an army chaplain was introduced by a protestant pastor to a group of soldiers, and he said ā€œLadies, heā€™s singleā€. He wears a ring now so there are no misunderstandings.
 
The ignorance :mad: - no priest is ā€˜singleā€™, they are very much in a committed relationship - with the bride of Christ, the Church.

Many orders of nuns have long had a tradition of wearing wedding-type rings to signify their commitment of body and soul to God. Some priests do the same. Doesnā€™t have to mean he was previously married or anything.

Itā€™s nothing to frown aboutā€¦geez. Its an honest mistake. Protestant pastors are able to marry-- he may not have even known he was Catholic yet. I thought (as well as my priest friend) it was funny
