Hi all,

After having attended Mass regularly for over 2 years, I am about to start the RCIA and will hopefully be taking the sacriments next year.

What I was wondering about is as I am unbaptised and will obviously be taking that sacrament, will I also still have to go through the sacrament of Confession as well.

My take on it was that Baptism forgives all sins, so would going through confession as well not be superflouos.

Forgive me if I have got the wrong impression about Baptism.

Since you are not baptized (I assume you were never baptized…)…the answer will be no.

You will have nothing at all to confess! You are sorry in baptism and it washes all your sins away. In fact they will then never even be “matter” able to be confessed really. So never return to them after your baptism! Go forward in joy following Christ …in whom is true life.

You will though a little later…make a first confession… It will not involve the confessing of ANY sins prior to baptism but sins committed after your baptism. Not that your intending on not repenting and avoiding sin in baptism…but we all have some “venial” sins at times…that we need to repent of and work on. It is good to have regular confession to aid in following Christ.

(Venial sins can be forgiven in various ways…but it is good to go to confession regularly for some of them at least…and if you ever fall into a mortal sin…then of course you would need to confess such)

Bookcat is correct. If you have not been Baptized you would not (and cannot) receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession beforehand.

But as part of your ongoing Catholic spiritual life after Baptism, frequent Confession is a great source of grace (as is frequent reception of the Eucharist).

Oh, and congrats on starting up RCIA! 👍 I pray it will be a blessed time for you.

and even after baptism…the sins prior to baptism…are not really matter for confession at all. 🙂
