I’ve been away from the Church a long time, “finding myself”. It’s taken many years, but in recent months it has become increasingly clear to me that I will probably find myself exactly where I left me - in the Church. So although I’m late (should really have done this BEFORE Easter) I’m going to confession this Saturday for the first time in years.

Like most cradle Catholics, I thought I had the formula confession down pat, but on closer inspection I now find that there is a second, newer rite which I have no knowledge of. So, is the old “bless me, Father, for I have sinned” formula still valid, or do I have to learn an entire new rite?

Be at peace! The old “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned” is still alive and well.

Have no fear. You might add, “it has been a long time since my last confession. Please help me to make a good confession, Father.”

Mustard, in addition to what Joan said, you can now choose to do confession face to face with your Priest. Like yourself, i’m a Catholic revert and when I returned to the Church last summer, I found doing confession face to face much more comfortable and easy to do.

Best of luck on your journey home to the Church!

Hi folks, and thanks for your help and kind words. Went to confession this morning only to be greeted by a “No Confessions Today” sign in front of the confessional. Next one is Monday. Let’s hope I don’t die before then (or, indeed, for a long time after!)😃

I’m new to confession as I was confirmed last week. I went to my third confession today :o and I have never done it anonymously. For me, it’s much better face to face.
Best of luck with your confession! Your in my prayers!

Same here, newbie, went to my second confession today. I went to my first one with my Priest, but I did it anonymously. I went to my church today for confession, at the usual time (3:30-4:15) but things were abuzz, apparently they had a wedding that was running over a bit and there were still wedding party people hanging around taking pictures. Also I saw Father, but he was not in the confessional yet, and he was still wearing his Army digs (he is the National Guard Priest for some part of the Guard here and goes there one weekend a month or something). I had got freaked out, had an anxiety attack and left. I went to another parish, with a later Vigil and thus a later confession. I did it face to face, which was not as bad as I expected.

I feel that there were forces at work trying to keep me from going, I had trouble leaving the house (left four times, kept forgetting things and having to stop and go back), the wedding going over at my usual church and things being behind schedule, having an anxiety attack, etc. But I wouldn’t let all the trouble get in the way, and I am so glad that I didn’t. Confession is truly a sacrament of healing. Unfortunately, I still had anxiety issues all day from the attack this afternoon and had to take anxiety medication when I got home, but it’s all better now.

Just to let you know, in RCIA, they gave us a “Guide to Confession”, I take it with me when I go, because I don’t know what I am doing. I even told the Priest that I was really new at this, and would need some guidance, he was very good at helping me make a good confession. Don’t worry, just tell the Priest that it has been _____ long since your last confession, and you might need some help. It will be fine. At my parish, I think the “Guides” are available somewhere, I have seen similar guides at other churches.

After twenty years, I finally did it today, and it wasn’t at all as bad as I remember it. Used the old rite, grill and anonymous whispers, and felt about twenty pounds lighter coming out. It’s great to be home:thumbsup:
