I have been feeling like I should go to confession lately, but when I make an examination of conscience I can’t think of any grave sins. And, I go to mass daily so my venial sins are forgiven then… But, I still feel like I should go… But there seems to be no prompting reason to go.

I also, have found that when I do go to confession, I end up becoming really depressed afterward. It seems like everyone else is all happy and stuff and I’m here like “what is wrong with me?” I have issues with anxiety and depression, but I would think that confession would help ease this.

I had the (last) opportunity to go tonight for Holy Week and didn’t go. Now I’m feeling a bit scrupulous about it. I’ve also haven’t been able to hear God lately. I have started to pray more this week and it seems like I’m not getting anything out of it. (I know I’m getting graces but I can’t sense them).

I’m just feeling really lost right now. I want to feel close to God and I don’t know what’s up…😊

Time to read St. John of the Cross’s Dark Night of the Soul?

Confession could yes help “emotionally” sure. But grace is not per se something one feels.

Ones feelings do not always follow “reality” in ones life, ones prayer life or even in the Sacraments- especially if as you note struggle with anxiety and depression. Have you sought assistance in this? From a good Catholic Counselor…a Priest etc? That may be key. Just as if one has a “cold” one will not usually “feel better” after if one were go to confession - so to if there are other aspects that are effecting one. One seeks out both the spiritual and the ordinary helps God provides.

As to prayer: frjacquesphilippe.com/theme/difficulties-prayer

As too confession of venial sins -such can yes be quite good…*(but do not try to say them all…) even if they can be forgiven in other ways too.

If you feel you need to go to confession, then by all means, please, Go.

Someone told me of a examination method they use, using the 7 deadly sins as guides, remembered by the phrase PALE GAS (Pride Anger Lust Envy Gluttony Avarice Sloth.) Just go through PALE GAS and take it to confession. Also, I’d recommend asking for the intercession of St. Padre Pio - he was a great confessor, and has helped me out a number of times with his prayers.

When I prepared for a general confession I used this guide, How to Make a Good Confession. It’s pretty long and exhaustive, but helpful.

If that seems like too much, here is another examination of conscience guide at the National Catholic Register website.

Many people get into a “funk” with the faith and lose the butterflies over it occasionally. Whenever this happens to me I do two things. First, I pray more, which then makes me realize that I wasn’t praying as I should’ve been when my feelings of being away from God began. Second, I read conversion stories because they always help bring back my excitement for the faith. I realize this may not work for everyone, but maybe it would help you. If you are interested, whyimcatholic.com has some great stories.
