After reading another thread (forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=995533), I began to wonder something. A few weeks ago, my dad and I went to Confession together. I went first, and then he went. When we both got out, my dad told me that the priest had said to him in his Confession that I was a “very interesting person”. Would this be breaking the seal of Confession in anyway? I don’t think he was characterizing me based on my sins, but on the questions I usually ask and whatnot.

I have no idea, I’d say this /might/ fall under as breaking the seal, because he’s telling someone else about something learned in the confessional, but then again it’s not general at all…

Did the priest reveal to your Dad any or all of the sins you confessed? If he did not then the seal has not been broken. If he did then it should be reported; if all he said was that he thought you were interesting, then the seal is not broken.

I would agree with this if looking at this only from a technical/legalistic approach.

In reality this was a very poor judgment by the priest.

I don’t believe he discussed any of my sins with my dad.

Also, he knew we were related because he’s seen us before. He probably knew us when I was a kid; I was just too young to remember, I guess.

I would assume the best and go ahead and think that the priest was not referring to your confession at all. That comment could be made based on a wide range of observations.
