I was just wondering if one went to confession and confessed mortal sins. Then realized he forgot to say a couple. Then the next confession he forgot to mention them again would he go back into the state of mortal sin?

If you genuinely forget these sins (and this must be a genuine case of forgetting, not a convenient omission) when making your Confession the, it is my understanding, that these sins have indeed been forgiven. You are meant to then mention any you remember at a following Confession, but they have actually already been forgiven. That is my understanding of it.

I have also been told on more than one occasion during Confession to leave the past behind and move on rather than keep revisiting the past. I was away from the Church for decades and up to my neck in sin, things are always coming back to me from decades ago, but I have been told to let the past go, rather than keep dwelling on it.

No, You have been absolved of your sins…If you forget them even twice in a row. That is if you truly forgot them. Why don’t you write yourself a note next time.
